Potholes

Last night my local news had a feature about the plight of potholes.
Apparently after our 'big freeze' winter, potholes have been cropping up all over the place. I understand they are caused by freezing and thawing in tarmac cracks.
I have noticed a massive increase in the number of potholes in the sides of the road on my morning bicycle commute.
Apparently my local council is proposing increasing the council tax rate, as each repair costs on average 70 pounds. They are concerned about the rebound costs of personal injury lawsuits crippling the council.
It would never have occurred to me to sue the council if I had an accident on my bicycle (or motorbike) as a result of a pothole, I would have put it down to bad-luck. Thanks for the tip calendar news
I was curious to know if any other members had noticed a similar increase in road condition problems.

You might also notice that in summer when we've had hot weather for a prolonged period that tar starts going runny.

Plenty of new holes round my way, the water gets in the crap or cheap road surfaces and expands when frozen and loosens the its structure, the cheap roads where they spray bitumen then cover with stones are falling apart, and are deadly on the corners.

You'll notice most of these new potholes are around previous repairs, i.e. because they scrimped on previous repairs, cracks have appeared and the 'big freeze' has caused them to break up again.

It's always nice to see short sighted budget cuts coming back to bite the council on the arse (except we end up paying of course!).

Yep the roads near me are a mess. All of the bodged repairs have broken up again.

Nothing we can really do about it apart from report them using fillthathole, and then sue when you go through them and crash/break somethng.

Plenty of people on here seem to think it's their right that the council which is paid for by local tax etc should reimburse them for damage done by such massive potholes they still somehow managed to ride through at speed.

It was obvious after the snow last February and again this year that it's really knackered the roads around here.
I used to work in Henley on Thames and they had an easier solution for some of the back roads around there - they put up 'failed road' signs and ignored them!

They didn't stop you going down them and they were permanent signs as you'd see normal road signs - up on the same poles etc.
Think it was just a "this road's knackered and we don't care" - oddly enough, this was around more of the old-terraced houses, I'd presume the streets with many £1m+ properties did better.

They do that around here a lot too. The main B-road leading into my town has had a sign at either end saying "Temporary road surface" for the last five years.

Interestingly, France as similar if not colder temperatures than we do and their motorways and trunk roads and town routes are excellently smooth

pretty sure these potholes will be here for a gd wee while, i have remembered where the worst ones are in my area but they are litterelly appearing within a week. at a crossroads near my college there were a few loose stones, then more stones, now itsa huge fucking hole due to the massive ammount of bus/truck and car traffic going through the crossroads. i spotted the loose stones last wedensday and hit the hole on monday.

as said earlier the repairs are pretty much just bodge repairs, to fix the road properly they have to strip away most of the top layer and do it over again.

what is also causing problems is having all the cabling/manhole covers etc on the road rather than on the pavements. in lanzarote (used to live there) they had all that crap under the pavements so they never dug up the roads again after laying it down. if they had to re-dig the stuff up it was pedestrians inconveniance, not drivers.

Friend of mine drove his land rover into a pothole so deep it burst the tyre. He complained to the council and asked to be compensated.

The very next day the hole had been filled and he was told there was no hole so he couldn't be compensated...
Seemingly someone had been paid quite a bit to fix that crack very very early in the morning.

There are alot of them around here. The two roads either end of my street are riddled with them to the point where I won't use one of them lol.

Alot of them have been sprayed blue with cans of spraypaint. Whether or not that means it's due to be fixed or a warning I don't know.

As far as I know they don't have to compensate people if it's the first time they have been told - and personally I'm glad it's that way. I don't want my council tax money paying people that haven't seen a hazard so big it damages their vehicle.
I also don't want them sending people out to constantly drive the roads with camera cars to analyse the surface.
However, if they have been told then get another complaint, I believe at that point they do have to offer compensation.

So their actions make sense.

Or fix my street - you can report all sorts of problems "like graffiti, fly tipping, broken paving slabs, or street lighting" abandoned vehicles / etc. The local council does seem to act on this stuff quite quickly.
