Think this is the right section to put this in.

My dad is doing the Big Battlefield Bike Ride in 2010 trying to raise money for help for heroes. 350 miles on a mountain bike in 5 days during the last week of May 2010. Meeting at HMS Victory
then heading to France. 350 miles through France & finish in Paris. He needs to raise £2,200 MINIMUM for the Help for Heroes charity. Any
donations are greatfully received. If you do want to donate then you can do so via this link -----> https://www.bmycharity.com/V2/event.aspx?e=c2b7e571-c0ee-4d48-b990-8c1c53fc5c0f <-----

More info at

Cheers
Fenton Thumbs Up

Brilliant cause, I would like to hope that we (the UK) could raise as much for the Heroes as we did for Haiti. Karma

Why are they considered 'heroes'?

Because they're prepared to lay down their lives for their country

Because having both your legs blown off and then just saying "Well thats a bit shit, oh well better crack on, it could be worse", that takes a hell of a lot of determination and guts that most average joe's don't have.

At the end of the day it's just a name.

You think they chose to get injured or they chose to let thousands of civilians die? If they had made that choice then I'd agree with you.

The only choice they made was to serve Queen and Country and to give up their lives if necessary - that's what makes them heroes in my eyes.

So using the same reasoning, anyone injured in an industrial accident is a hero and anyone injured in a car/bike crash is a hero?

Who is forcing them to do what they're doing if it isn't their own choice?

Putting themselves in danger to save the life of another solider would be heroic. Putting themselves in danger to save the lives of civilians would be heroic. Doing something out of the 'job description' could make someone a hero. But what is heroic about someone doing the job they signed up for? Confused

As i stated, most people wouldn't be able to just say "Oh well my legs are gone, may as well crack on". Also what problem do you have with a charity helping disabled people have a better quality of life?

Say's a lot more about you than them doesn't it?

Yes I know that. As that is part of your criteria for what makes someone a hero, does that mean they're a hero because of what happened to them (got injured) rather than because of what they do or how they got injured?

I don't have a problem 'with a charity helping disabled people have a better quality of life', I never said that I did. Rolling Eyes I'm just trying to figure out why anyone injured in Iraq/Afghanistan is automatically labeled a hero.

A thread about help for heros isn't the time or the place to ask why anyone injured in Iraq/Afghanistan is automatically labeled a hero? Confused

I have great sympathy for the injured soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan because they/we have been sold a lie.

It's a thread where someone is trying to raise money for a charity, would you go into a thread about raising money for an AIDS charity declaring God hates fags?

I think Ste has a good point.

If it was "Help for Veterans" or etc etc then I would take no issue and support it as a worthwhile cause.

However, "Help for Heroes" is a outward symptom of the general mindlessness that is rife nowadays. Automatically assigning hero status to troops is something that I find disgusting. Not least because it devalues the "hero" status given to those (including soldiers) who earn hero status through heroic acts.

There is no conscription, soldiering is a personal choice these days. To be a hero you need to do heroic acts, not join HM forces.

Cause is good, how it presents itself is bad.

It's a thread where someone is trying to raise money for a charity so that their dad can go on a cycling holiday. Same as all these type of threads as they all say words to the extent of "please donate lots of money to this charity cos I want to go and do something fun"
