Yet another boring Almax chain thread

I'm going to start commuting on the bike and it will be left in a city centre during the day. I have a metal post to lock it to. I've had a read through previous threads and the Almax chains seem about as good as it gets, had a look on their site and they sound bloody heavy. Hard to tell from the photographs how physically massive they are to lug about. The top end ones look like they'd be so big and heavy they'd only be suitable for locking the bike up at home, though I've noticed they do a smallish one for pushbikes but that surely can't be much cop.

Does anyone have an Almax that they take with them on the bike? I've got not under seat storage, was thinking of something I can put in a small bag and bungee to the pillion seat (it's a wide seat).

I use an Almax III and Squire lock, get the optional Kriega tail pack and it's perfectly manageable as long as you're not routinely taking pillions. I put it in my tank bag once, never again

If i need to take my Almax III anywhere, I strap my old tankbag to my pillion seat, and coil the chain up in it. Weighs about 8kgs or so. It's a satisfyingly hefty bit of kit

Agree with Seb about not putting it on the tank though.

Would you be able to take it there once, and leave it chained to the post? Or would this lead to people gumming up and tampering with your lock?

Always take your lock with you? What's better than having no lock?

An expensive lock that's been messed about with so it renders it useless and leaves you out of pocket... you're going to need a tooled up professional thief to help you remove the lock!

Don't leave the chain attached to a post. If someone wants to steal your bike then removing your chain one night would mean that the next day your bike wouldn't be chained up.

I use my Almax series 3 with CISA padlock (on Almax's own advice), religiously. And i always carry it in my tank bag, which uses magnets to attach to my tank (it's a CB500 so it's a proper, steel tank). It also has a strap but i stopped using it ages ago because it's more faff.

Only time i ever have an issue is when i come off the bike (as in an unplanned and sudden stop, if you get what i'm saying) and my tank bag then comes off, and gets handed back to me by a bewildered pedestrian ("what's in this, bricks?!") who sees the crash. The bag itself doesn't get very far though, it's too heavy! (~8kg)

And yes, i agree with don't leave it around a post. The whole point of the Almax is that breaking it is loud and not quick. But left overnight with no one and no bike around it's easy to sabotage, rendering your security useless.

Am going to get a top box at some point, to save my carrying a tank bag with me all the time. Will let everyone know how i get on (have heard too much weight over the back of a bike is bad).

As long as the chain is not outside near to where any snooping chavs can see it, then leave it overnight. One trick they use is to put superglue in the lock.

Trying to decide on chain lenght, now my petroltanks can come off in 3 minutes and there is a perfect hole in the bike under it to thread the chain through ....

Will the bike have a solid frame section under the seat, so that using the hole would mean the chain is through the bike frame as is recomended on here ... see pic ... ta

It's more on whether there is a frame section under the tank than lenght, as i was planning on getting a 2m series 3 to accomodate a trailer when i find one ... those pinch things seem good, must be much better than threading the chain through most days, as long as the pinch is as strong as the Almax ...

The bike cover i'm getting has openings in the floor for chain to anchor, and as i'm wall anchoring i may nned the 2m plus pinch anyway ...

The dealer selling me the bike could tell me these things but he's not returned emails yet ... ta ............

Dunno, haven't weighed it myself, but I wanted a chain I could carry in a rucksack and I wouldn't want a heavier one. 16mm means even 0.7m length is a lot of metal.

Yeah, but that Kruger chain bag thing is supposed to be really good ... i would not want to carry one in a rucksack unless forced to ...
