Got me thinking from the iPhone thread....

Should they be perfectly fine and acceptable in an ideal world?

Personally I think they should be fine in magical happy land as they would have no racist intent behind them. I think it should be able to be taken in jest just like a joke directed toward hair colour, no-one really takes any offence as it is obviously not serious.

Obviously in the real world many people have their differing views and grievances and plenty of racist jokes have real racist intent behind them, which of course would make racism jokes to be generally unacceptable as they are being used with hurtful intent. This is of course without diving into the history of racial discrimination - a large and somewhat sensitive area in itself.

So going on the premise that "jokes about hair colour are seen as acceptable", would "jokes about skin colour" be acceptable in principle?

A good example of racial stereotyping being turned into humour was my friends "Black Card", he made himself a "Black Card" which was then turned into part of a act/sketch at opportune moments. Along the lines of "Wait wait! I'm disagreeing on this, *cue getting card out from wallet* sorry guys but I'm gonna have to play the black card....".

His reasoning was that the whole idea of racism was so stupidly laughable that the only thing to do was well to laugh at it and treat it with contemptible humour. This sentiment I agree with, but to be quite fair he told me that a lot of his family didn't see the funny side of his black card and actually thought it quite offensive.

Thoughts?

How do all racist jokes start?
With a quick look over your shoulder

What's black and begins with 'nig'?
Night

Before I start being offensive, I assume this thread is for posting crude, offensive, racist jokes that would make baby Jesus cry? I reckon that is the easiest way to see who thinks they're acceptable and who doesn't. Smile

As to if they're acceptable or not, I'd say that comes down to if the person thinks that it's funny because it's true or if they think that it's funny because it's offensive and risque.

Racist jokes?Rolling Eyes
Should they be acceptable? Rolling Eyes

I look at it like this.
If you want to make them in the company of your friends, and out of the earshot of the race youre mocking, i dont see a problem with it {although i do think people like that are sad fucks if they get amusement from ridiculing someones racial background}

If you want to make them towards people you dont know, and who dont know you either, then..no...it isnt acceptable in the slightest.

Its a no brainer really. If anyone thinks its acceptable to make these kind of jokes outside of their own social groups and friends network then clearly they have very little respect for other people and were raised by uneducated baboons in the dark recesses of society Wink

How much of it comes down to "programming"?
We are bombarded on a daily basis with stories about people being offended at this that and the other.
Cripples complaining about any slight comment regarding disbility.
Blacks, indians, Pakistani's complaining about racism (Note: anyone white complaining about racism is usually told to STFU as people can't supposedly be racist against Honkies).
Even lezza's (usually the bull dyke ones) complaining about being offended at some harmless comment.

But how many of them are actually deep down truly offended?
Or are they merely going with the flow and vocalizing what they think the new "PC" society actually expects them to say.
And that by raising their voice in protest, expect the offender to be slapped down by "The Man" and thereby they've struck a blow for their particular pigeon holed community they have decided to represent.
How many complainers actually lose sleep over comments, jokes etc.

I think it's laughable that if even one person complains about something (say, an ad on TV) then some official body has to investigate. The world's smallest violin player, just for you!
Tell 'em to Get a Life!

If hundreds or thousands complain then fair enough but the fact that only a handful complain is not an indication that there's something broke that needs to be fixed. Merely that there's a handful of numpties that need to get a life.

And in other biking news ......... Shifty

Ignorant. Thumbs Down

You'll need to do a proper risk assessment before reading the punchline, but I'm sure you'll agree on how racist this is:

"Wenn ist das Nunstruck git und Slotermeyer?"

"Ja! Beiherhund das Oder die Flipperwaldt gersput."

Seeing as im neither blond or ginger, i cant answer that question for the people that are.
Blond and ginger arent a race are they, one might be a minority group yes, but can hardly be described a group of people that have ever been harshly treated and abused for decades and countless generations due to the colour of their hair...and subsequently take major offence to continued mockery.

The topic was about racist jokes, thats what my answer is in reply to.

Please don't avoid the question. Do the same rules apply for jokes about gingers or blondes? The fact you aren't ginger or blonde is completely irrelevant.

By your logic, does that mean it's okay for a black guy to be racist to a white guy, as whites aren't a group of people that have ever been harshly treated and abused for decades and countless generations due to the colour of their skin?

How about when people of a particular race make their own jokes about that race, take for example, Def Comedy Jam, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle. Now they are getting on a fucking stage and saying this shit so that millions of people can hear it, certainly not amongst their close friends and social circle.

Should they be labelled as racist biggots? I mean, surely if anything they are encouraging this sort of behaviour?

Or could it simply be that most people have a fucking sense of humour and can tell when something is meant as a joke and when something has real hatred inherent within the 'joke'?

Smegballs' friends' "Black card", I'd imagine will see him getting his teeth punched out before long - theres no hint of a joke, regardless of whether he means it as such or not, he is just coming out randomly with a jibe against black peoples protests against racism - clearly it's meant as a joke to him, a very shit one I might add, but if you're going to try a be a comedian you need to think of your demographics reaction, and it's all about delivery really.

Besides, he states his justification as "the idea of racism is so stupidly laughable", now whilst I think what he means is that being racist in the first place is so stupid, but then that doesn't really work with what he is saying as he is pulling out this card.....

Not to mention its a fucking shit joke anyway.

Im not avoiding anything but the blondes/gingers thing leads onto deeper issues and attitudes within people, and their overall lack of respect. Stick to the topic and ill answer anything you throw at me.

No it doesnt mean its ok for a black guy to do it and nowhere did my logic suggest that, if a black guy did then in my eyes he is no different to the white guy {or whatever colour guy}...

Allow me to explain something to you.
Black comedians, and some of the black population, only use the derrogatory terms that white people created to diffuse and lessen their original meaning and to show the racist culture that the names have no effect anymore.
Over time it has worked to an extent, but dont believe for a second any black person actually likes the names. If it werent for the fact that the names werent used to insult.....no black person, comedian or otherwise, would be using them anymore.

You said "can hardly be described a group of people that have ever been harshly treated and abused for decades and countless generations due to the colour of their hair...and subsequently take major offence to continued mockery. "

As it's not okay to make a joke about a group of people who have "been harshly treated and abused for decades and countless generations" does that mean it is okay to make a joke about a group of people who haven't "been harshly treated and abused for decades and countless generations"?

You are avoiding the blondes/ginger thing. Either in your opinion it's okay to make jokes about blondes/gingers, or it's not okay to make jokes about them.

If it's not okay to make a joke about skin colour then it would be very wrong to make jokes about someones hair colour.

Ok, I see where you're coming from with reference to derogatory terms used to describe black people. Can you explain then aabout the common stereotypes, things like eating fried chicken, robbing cars, robbing people, drug dealing, mistreating women etc etc I could mention more but I'd have to go through my collection.

Do they make all of these jokes to diffuse the stereotypes made by white people and lessen their original meaning?

Or.......and hey, I know this is going to sound crazy and waaaaaaaaay out there, but bear with me........could it just be that maybe...............just maybe..........it's a fucking joke and is funny? Funny on all counts, from all sides, no malicious intentions or anything.

Maybe some people just don't get comedy, and to them everything has a sinister undertone and everyone has hidden agendas with reference to what they are saying.

As I said above, you can tell when someone is making a harmless joke that is just a play on a given sterotype, and you can tell when someone is making a joke that isn't really a joke but a way to disguise their genuine disdain for a particular race or group of people. Now people might not always take as jokes those that are done with harmless intent, but you can't please all the people all the time, but I don't think that justifies them being labelled as "Racist".

I dont know where youre heading with this or what point youre trying to make but if you want my answer to the above, it would be no..
Mocking people for whatever reason is a limp dick thing to do in my opinion and i think anyone that finds humour in it is a sad little twat who covers up their own insecurities and issues by gettig a laugh at other peoples expense.

See above reply if you really want my answer but i dont see what it has to do with the topic of race or where its leading.

I didnt say its not ok to make jokes, i said do it if you want to but have the decency to do it out of earshot of the group/person its aimed at if you really must mock them for your own pathetic self gratification.
Do you understand what respect is ste?do you have any manners?do you like causing trouble and annoying people out in the world just so you can have a laugh?
Hair, skin, number of arms and legs, whatever.....laugh at it if you think its something to laugh at but dont do it directly infront of the person unless you know they wont be offended.Simple really.

Pretty much, yes mate.
Some are just general jokes though that most cultures make within themselves and to each other, and have no direction towards the white, or any other, population.
English/white people mock themselves and their own culture too dont they...i bet even you do it aswell if you think about it.

Im not making any issue out of any of this though because i dont actually care if people want to make a black joke, or race joke, or hair joke, or whatever. As far as black jokes go though, i dont like them at all, i dont see why i have to accept them, and i wont put up with anyone cracking them around me no matter what.
Again, it boils to respect doesnt it.
Make your jokes and have a laugh, but realise that theres a time and place to do it and not everyone is going to see the humour. Some people will react in a way you wont like....so unless you know what that reaction is going to be....show some respect and good manners.
Thumbs Up

i could tell you a little story about a guy in a takeaway a few weeks ago with no comprehension of respect and manners towards people who thought it was ok to ask the black guy serving him for a "big bag of niggers "
It didnt end well for him and he soon regretted it, but ive since found out that niggers is also a word used for skinny well done chips/crispy french fries. Laughing
Still, he learned a valuable lesson that day i think and if the guy behind the counter hadnt reacted so quickly, i was about to anyway. Wink

No, but its a deserved and predictable response and one that i myself find perfectly acceptable.
If you think its ok to directly mock something about a person straight to their face, then you accept the consequences of your actions dont you.

I show manners and respect to everyone i come across in the world from the second i meet them, im intelligent enough to know what i should or shouldnt say and i know what i should or shouldnt do around new people aswell......but if they dont know then i become a very different person and all bets are off.

Speaking as one of the forum Gingers, I'm tempted to make a ginger card for myself, as per the first post. For the record, I don't give much of a toss about the content of ginger jokes. This is probably largely due to just learning to get on with it, after being the recipient of some rather brutal bullying/abuse in my younger years.

Incidentally, since we're on the subject of race; my Mrs is black, and we're hoping to spawn a legion of duracell-coloured kids to torment all and sundry. The world shall feel my wrath. Very Happy

If I had a black missus, after I was comfortable with her I'd probably give her ethnic digs. The same way I gave my missus digs about her origins.
Same for friends. I make jokes to my Southern American friend. Not too offensive mind but just little pokes that he can laugh at and leave everyone who isn't familiar with us very uncomfortabe. More recently, a Vietnamese acquaintance of mine (used to work together years ago) saw me in the university hallways and proceeded to jokingly use a minority joke to make me feel uncomfortable, and was in stitches that it just made me more open.
Wouldn't see it as OK to strangers unless it is the jokes subject using it to diffuse any racial insecurity between you.

I believe racism is born of a 'higher' culture's fear of a 'lower' culture, as in "If they get to run the show our civilisation and comforts thereof are going straight down the crapper." Skin-colour just happens to be a coincidentally convenient way of recognizing many of those considered to be of a 'lower' culture.

As to what defines a 'lower' culture, it would seem that living in harmony with nature and not defiling and plundering it is considered 'lower'. Which actually means it's the higher culture in my opinion. Unless iPods really are better than Dream-Catchers.
