What would the correct method if the knife is left inside the wound?

Would the treatment for foreign bodies (immobilise, pressure around the wound) be appropriate here - keeping the knife in the casualty?

No one...... Shifty Shhh!

I was just running through a few first aid scenarios and I couldn't make out what to do. I imagined a embedded blade causing further damage if muscles were tensing etc

As there is a few medical personnel on here they could inform me!

IIRC, first aid dictates that the foreign object should be left in, and bandaging and pressure applied surrounding the wound maintained until either the paramedics arrive or the guy dies.

Good luck in court.

stab yourself to get some first hand ideas.
in the head. that way the stabbing is closer to the ideas, and you'll have a better experience.

Well BCF, I went out to a mates and ended up getting stabbed on the way over. I've lost a few pints of blood and can't get my DIY blood transfusion kit down from the top shelf as I get all dizzy when I stand up.

Few plasters and paracetamol right?

I think take as many paracetemol as possible, drink some vodka and push a flump into the wound.

Shit, I forgot, you have to treat for shock as well, try to keep the wound elevated above the heart - if this means them laying down with legs propped up so be it. They are more likely to die from shock than the damage of the wound itself.

I'm the designated first aider in my section of the lab, which is a bad idea really as I'd probably remember the important bits long after the person has expired. Ah well, thats what the insurance is for Thumbs Up

Who would leave the knife in? It would have my finger prints on, so that means I'm taking it with me.

Bleach will kill foreign bodies and then once you've bleached it you should pour salt over the stab wound as that will help keep it clean and stop it getting infected. Keeping the knife in the casualty is the best thing to do, it'll heal up around the knife and everything will be fine.

Alternatively, you could call the amber lamps or go to A&E for help from people who're doctors. Bleach & salt or see a doctor, it's your choice.

Who have you stabbed then? edit: oh, seems you've been stabbed rather than stabbed someone.

OOooooooohhhhh I forgot to do a tourniquet, use a pink powerband they are the bestest. If you do it tight enough it might pop the foreign body out and solve your problem.

More seriously, where is the wound? You say you've lost a few pints, how long has it been since being stabbed? How deep is the wound?

I've been stabbed in the foot, 'tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church-door; but 'tis enough, 'twill serve: ask for
me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man.

Stabbed in the foot... were you attacked by a midget? Razz

The knife is going to need to be pulled out and at the moment it'll be helping to stop the bleeding. A few pints of blood is quite a lot to lose, you should go to the hospital. Turn up there bleeding with a stab wound and you might get to jump the queue of drunks.

Don't be silly. Sit on a dildo, punch yourself in the moobs and then masturbate furiously.

It's the BCF way.

Take a First Aid class, then you wont wonder. Laughing

I have and used to be qualified, nothing particularly spectacular St.J's Young Lifesaver.

That has since lapsed and I haven't had need to use it so was just musing about it tonight.

Note that I'm not actually hurt, but BCF demanded a semi-interesting story Mr. Green

I remember this.

You're supposed to pack round the wound/knife/stabby thing with gauze padding to staunch the bleeding.

However, you've obviously been stabbed by a beginner. Everyone knows if you want to stab some bugger, you give a little twist as you withdraw the blade, this ensures the wound won't close properly...

I read that some where.

Bleeding usually requires direct pressure on the site of injury to stop it.

Indirect pressure would be called for in the case of a penetrating foreign body. A donught bandage is useful in this scenario.

A knife wound to the chest is sealed by the knife. Pull it out and the lung will collapse as air rushes in through the hole so leave it in unless you konw how to deal with a pneumothorax. If the wound is "sucking", try to seal it with cling film or similar (this is why soildiers keep their field dressings wrapped in cling film).

If they have been stabbed in the gut, place them in the "W" position with the shoulders raised, arse on the floor and knees pulled up to minimise pressure on the gut and reduce the likeleyhood of anything landing up on the floor that is supposed to be inside.

Made me laugh when we got told a soldiers body armour is more to hold everything in than it is to stop bullets.

Then when we got told to, try to prevent organs "escaping" if they do get out, try to keep them clean and intact - such as inside a plastic bag.

I had a mental image of the liver running away with a "YAY We're free1!!" before a "not so fast" and being rammed into a baggie"...

If ones guts are intact and not broken - so only the gut bag (peritoneum?) that has been cut, do they stand a good chance of simply being washed and put bag into the body?
