Ok I’m after a more powerful headlight bulb for my Transalp and don’t fancy the expense of fitting HID. So I was wandering how high a Watt H4 bulb can I fit before I risk melting the reflectors and wiring?

Will standard electrics stand up to an 80W Rally bulb or even a bulb 100W?

Hi

Maybe. However the wiring is easy, just run wires from the battery via a relay and trigger the relay with the standard headlight wires.

Heat wise it will depend on the materials used to make the headlight, headlight size, etc.

All the best

Hi,

I have a ZX9 with at standard bulb of 55w. This was awful for my weekly commute. After speaking to a few guys on zx9 forums, I bought a 100/110w 4500k bulb (well i bout two for £14 but only need one).

I have been running it all winter and its been fine. I was give a higher amp fuse but I have kept the original 10amp one in. No problems yet, but a world of difference in night vision.

I was thinking of trying one of these, not heard anything about them though:

What is the secret to good lighting?

Cars manage it! Even a normal crappy fiesta or such has much better lights than any bike I've ever seen.

Some of the snazzier cars are amazing to be in at night, they light up everything ! I always think I could ride so much quicker at night if my bikes had car lighting....

Can you remember the name of the bulb?

I was thinking of getting a 80W Ring Rally bulb just to play it safe. But if a 100W works in there with no problems even better.

It is a Sumex.com Race Sport Helium Quartz bulb. Its a H4 fitting 100w and has a colour temp of 5500k which is damn close to HID.

It gives off 2300LM

The back of the packet says warning: These bulbs are no road legal and are to be used for decorative purposes, off road or circuit only.

EDIT: These bulbs do not get as hot as some other high vis bulbs, but you'll want to check that they will not melt your reflector. If its glass you're fine. If its plastic you'll need to double check or keep and eye on it.

Secondly. If using a 10amp fuse the max wattage it'll take will be around 120w. I would recommend against using main beam and pushing the pass button, as this would result in a load of 190w which is enough to blow your fuse.

Thanks for that. Think I may play it safe and look at an 80W bulb that way it should be safe enough even if I do have plastic reflector.

Local Car shop has these going cheap:
https://www.motor-world.co.uk/index.cfm?product=1775&product_title=Ring%20Xenon%20Max%20H4%20Headlight%20Bulbs

But logically the higher Watt the bulb the better it should be. Out of interests do you have to change the bulbs over every MOT for road legal ones?

I have a plastic reflector on the ZX9 and haven't had any problems with the 90/100w bulb.

As for the MOT i haven't had one yet, but i'm planning on leaving the bulb in. They will only check the lights positioning. Looking at it from the front the light just seems like more of a car light so should be fine.

Not particularly. Bulbs are rated for their power consumption rather than their light output. Hence high output 60W legal bulbs.

Anything newer than mid 1980s can only legally have a 60W bulb max. However you will get away with most of the time as there is no real way to tell without taking the bulb out.

However don't expect a more powerful bulb to be that much better. You will still get the same beam pattern, so just more light where you already had light.

While if the headlight is properly adjusted it shouldn't make any difference to anyone else, stick a pillion on the back and you blind anyone coming the other way.

All the best

Keith

Well just fitted the 12v 100/80w Halogen bulb. I forgot you have to remove all the fairing to get to it on the old Transalp so a 15min job took an hour.

Looks brighter compared to the 60/55w Xenon headlight bulbs I had fitted last year and a lot whiter.

But won’t know how much difference till I go out at night or down an unlit road.

xenon/special filled bulbs/super brilliant ect are are still 65w dont bother with them

Proper xenon hid kits are cheap enough!

If you want more light but not xenon hid, then just use rally bulbs with uprated wiring. I run 90/130 IIRC on my ZX6R. Bulb life is less though so make sure you have a backup light source, mine went out at night after I passed a truck on the A34 at ~80mph ish, luckily I had a secondary light to cover me!

This months Ride magazine has a full review of all the bulbs on the market.

The bulbs that come out top are these

I put one of those Philips X-Treme vison bulbs in my bike. It's much whiter than the standard honda bulb. Regarding the 80% more light claim, I would say it was beleiveable.

Would definitely reccommend it as an easy and worthwhile upgrade. Thumbs Up

Can I ask why?

I haven't bought one, but I am tempted. Saying that only 1 more month of commutes in evening darkness.

Pretty much every review I have seen has stated they provide little benefit. Putting Xenon gas in a halogen bulb is not going to improve the output by 50%, 80% or whatever, nor is any form of coating going to do that. If you want more light out, you either need to put more power in (overwattage bulbs, using decent wires and connectors instead of the sh1tty stock ones) or using a different type of technology e.g high voltage arc HID bulbs. HID kits on ebay aren't even that expensive tbh.

My advice would be to clean your reflector and lens and check all your wiring connections are clean and in good condition between the battery and the bulb are good before you spend anything.

I'd agree with that. I had a bike with a dim light that was improved greatly by wiping the inside of the lens and reflector with a cleaning wipe.

Check the volts across the bulb too. If it is much less than the volts between the battery terminals then fitting heavier cable/relays can improve the voltage and result in more light output.
-Light output drops rapidly with a reduction in voltage.

They do not use Xenon gas. The glass that the filament is inside is smaller, and the gas inside is under greater pressure, so the fillament can burn hotter, and thus brighter. Or something like that Laughing
Either way, they do not use xenon gas, and do not claim to do so.

Here?s the Auto Express review of Xtreme Power

This is so new, we could not randomly select test samples, so can?t include it in our assessment. Yet performance of our pre production unit was staggering. Even compared with the current benchmark Plus per cent bulbs, the difference was immediate and dramatic. Philips claim an 80 per cent improvement over standard units, but we think that this is conservative. The results have been achieved in the same way as the 30 and 50 per cent lamps-by taking the allowed tolerances right to the edge. This time though as well as reducing the filament and burning it hotter, Philips has shrunk the glass casing.

As a result, the gas pressure can be increased for better light output.Engineers have also optimised the geometry and shield position to focus the light where it is needed.

Well it’s been a few months since I fitted the 80W bulb in Feb and its still going strong with daily use and nothing melted yet. Must admit cleaning the lens and reflector would be an idea but it's a sealed unit on the Transalp so I can’t Sad

RiDE reviewed standard wattage bulbs in April this year, you can find the results: here I'd already bought some Halfords Super Brilliance Blue (=6th) on a BOGOF early this year, but if I get the chance I'll try the Phillips X-treme Power @ £22.25/pair for this winter.
