As far as I know, the CD250u (~1980) and CB250N Superdream (1979-83) are very similar. Both using an air cooled, parallel twin, SOHC engine.

The CD250u has more classic styling, with further forward slung footrests for a more cruiser type seating position. It also has a less tuned engine putting out less power and with one less gear.

The CD250u is also a bit lighter.

If you're going with a Superdream, try and get the CB400N. They fetch roughly the same price as the CB250N but have twin front discs, weighs the same, and is a bit more grunty to pull the heavy design.

Or try and get the CB250RS which is a single cylinder version. Less power but much lighter, and more mechanically simple.

we very rarely see the cb400 in new zealand, as the learner limit is 250cc, i was looking at a swap with a guy for my xz400 so my mrs can do her licence,
the cb250g5 i had in the uk was ok, but it started to ead the head, and i broke 2 rocker arms and a valve stem, so not too impressed with that cb250 Very Happy

Hi

Thought the CD250U was based on the old CM200 engine. Quite a bit less chunky than the CB250N (which is basically a shrunk 400).

The CD range was mean to be the commuter bikes while the CB range was meant to be more sporty. Hence normally the CD had a single carb and the CB had twin carbs.

All the best

Keith

The CD250U (confusingly) has twin carbs, whereas the CB250 'nighthawk' that followed had (I believe) only a single one.

IMO they are absolutely brilliant, I loved mine and wish I still had it. Not at all fast but a reasonable amount of acceleration around town, although motorways are starting to strain things. The engine had a nice note and would happily chug along at idle speed in a fairly high gear.

Not sure what the situation is like in NZ but one of their downsides here is that some parts (such as the exhausts, which rust badly) are either not available or cost a fortune. Mine died due to the cumulative cost of necessary repairs far exceeding the value of the bike in the end.

I think the state of tune and crankshafts are different, the CB being 180 apposed and the 360 degrees apposed
