I'm realising i'm not going to be able to do the job i want without first specialising through getting a PhD. Does anyone on here have one? did you find it worth it? what kind of funding did you get and from where?

Thanks.

Am doing one now, in Pharmacology, so i can only speak for the biological sciences.

yeah it has been worth it so far but there are highs and lows, a lot of people drop out due to being unable to take the lows. (3-6 months without generating any usable data messes badly with your self esteem). funding me is the BBSRC, which came with the project and pays a stipend of £13k (tax free) for a year. However this can be topped up with demonstrating which at Leeds pays £14 an hr.

oh and you will hate undergrads, it is inevitable.

And all the undergraduates begin to hate the PHD students because they don't know jack shit about the stuff they are meant to be 'helping' you with. Laughing

Thats very true as the PhD students are normally assisting a workshop to earn some extra cash. normally they don't have a clue what its about till they get there.

I really wish i'd thought about this sooner as the funding deadline is monday!

the lack of knowledge, is at least in biology, is due to the fact the practicals are all techniques that no one uses anymore, thus we are all out of practice.

Edit: what subject are you doing?

I'm thinking about going back to university to do a masters and a PhD, but not in anything useful. I think I might just teach history to academics. I'd love to be called doctor though.
