Has anybody successfully replaced a pocket zip slider that has snapped and come off?

I've had quotes for 30quid for a replacement zip, which is quite steep. The zip is on a side pocket and about 15cm long.

Are clip-on sliders available to fit to existing zips?

Just a normal zip slider like one of these?

If so, have you tried doing it yourself, by sliding it back on from the bottom of the zip, and then stitching the bottom of the zip shut?

There seems to be a few "zip sliders" on ebay, or you could try getting some from your local hobbycraft type place

To be honest i dont think it's the actual Zip that makes it an expensive job, it's the sowing machine that is used, as it needs to be able to sow through tough leather, which most normal sowing machines cant (i think) Neutral

The expensive bit is paying for the 'faff factor'!!

Making stuff is easy, as you do it all in order - make bits, add fixings, line it all etc. When it comes to repairs and alterations it's a pain, as it's fiddly. It's the time that costs you money, as I'd think much of the work will be done by hand. It's the sewing machine needles that need to be sturdy for leather! Shifty

Replacing a zip means unpicking the old one by hand and perhaps some of the garment either side too along with any pocket linings and then fitting and tidying up around the new zip.

If you've just broken the pull bit then use a cable tie or you can buy fancy replacement pulls, but they're not cheap either. If it's the 'runner' bit that's come off the teeth then try getting it back on like Mark said and then securing the bottom part so it doesn't slide off again. Getting the teeth to line up again can be a pain though as they have a habit of not really being the best of friends again after they've fallen out!! Rolling Eyes

Cheers folks.

It is the entire runner that has broken and fallen off.

I had thought about un-picking the bottom of the zip and sliding on a new runner, but it looked a bit awkward.

There may be some sail-maker's needles and some cobbler's kit that were my Granddad's at my folks' house which would be up to the job.

If it was just the toggle bit just use a keyring or paper-clip.

I doubt that would have much impact on the pocket zip.
