If you beived that you deserve a pay rise at work having taken on a superior role (with no pay increase) and been sucesfull at it for a couple of years. . . .

Would you, when asking to be 'considered' for a pay increase, mention that your line manager informed you that (his words) a lazy member of staff earns more than you?

Or would you keep it simple and ask for more money?

Keep shtum. It is all about how great you are, not how rubbish other people are in comparison.

Don't mention the lazy member of staff.

I would ask to speak with your manager and state that you would like a pay rise, then justifiy it by stating what you do that is a above and beyond your current pay grade

What they pay other staff is between them and the other staff - pay rises should be awarded based on your own merits. But it doesn't hurt to mention the industry standard Smile

Evaluate how safe your job is, then decide what to do.

In that in the current climate you can't use the pay me more or I'll go elsewhere due to rampant unemployment. Asking and not getting yet staying will destroy you.

No job is 100% safe. I am as safe as, 'they have to get rid of the five contractors first'. The company contract is up for tender so I might be working for/with different people for a different company in a years time. So, rocking the boat now makes no odds (imho). In a way I'm better to fight for more now as a new company are unlikely to take people on with a rise.

As for the 'economic climate', the company may use that as an excuse as they did last year (pay freeze). But many other staff members in the same position as me (promoted with no pay increase) have asked for financial reward down the line, only to be knocked back. This has been going on for years. I'm probably the last of many staff members in this position to raise my hand and speak out.

I've spent my life being grateful for what I've got and Ive never asking for a penny more. In fact, I've always un-dersold myself.

With regards to not mentioning the other chap, I agree totally. However, I'm in a position where by I could easily make an official complaint about this line manager (for several different reasons). Im not going to do that but do not want him to get away with behaving so un-professionally.

most companies arnt that vindictive.

in most cases it'll be either 'can i get a raise?' 'yes of course, glad you asked.' or 'can i get a raise?' 'im afraid not, we just cant afford it' 'ok, maybe in a few months then?' 'sure, we'll talk again then'.

it cant hurt to ask, worst they can do is say no.. they're not going to try and drum you out of the job just coz you asked for a bit more. we're not in an oliver musical here.
