Evening all... just got back from a 370 mile / ?50 in fuel round trip to see a TM250, seller was a liar... bike had no mot when i got there, was filthy (said it was clean) so couldnt really see the condition of the cosmetics. Biggest potential bullshit though was that he said the bike didnt have an idle screw to adjust the tick over. Basically it stalled whenever and almost as soon as the revs were dropped. Said this was normal... well how the feck do you use the front brake and rev at the same time? Ok engine braking would help but surely ALL bikes should idle? Also the lights brightness seemed to be really effected by the amount of revs applied.... understandable to a degree but this was VERY noticeable.

Anyone corroborate/debunk his claims on the idle? Normal for lights to change that much with the revs?

Some lights are effected worse by revs than others.

After the first few revs it should stay steady though, not get brighter as the revs go up. If it does the regulator/rectifier's fucked.

And yes, all bikes should idle when warm, if it doesn't there's a fuelling issue. It can normally be sorted, and it's even easier on a carbed bike, probably just needs a clean and the idle re-setting.

If a bike's a dog, just walk away, sounds like you did the right thing.

The two Gasgas's I've ridden won't idle, and apparently that's normal for them...

2 stroke off roaders don't always like to idle...

But sounds like you done the right thing by leaving it to be honest! What a nob of a seller! I've got a 310 mile round trip to view a bike on saturday I just hope he's truthful and honest etc! Got some decent pics of it though so should all be good Cool

That's a really long way, I'm trying to weigh up whether I'll travel 400miles round trip to collect a cheap bike.

I really don't know if I can handle it.

I'd expect the lights to change quite a lot on an enduro bike with out a battery.
As mentioned, often two stroke dirt bikes don't idle - and similarly some 2 stroke race bikes etc. You get used to blipping the throttle, while using the brake if needed.

It can depend on how rich or lean the pilot air screw/idle mixture setting is, as well as if the throttle stop screw is backed right out.

I know that some trial's riders don't like a tickover so that when going down a steep hill there is maxium engine braking and no fuel going into the motor to drive the bike forward. If the idle mixture strength is too rich you get no tickover sometimes too. If it's set slightly weak you get poor throttle response and flicking open the throttle will stall the motor especially if its cold.
