Do you use normal bike multigrade 4-stroke engine oil, or do you use gear oil? Thinking

Also what ratio 2-stroke mix do you use (pre-mixers obviously). Neutral

Hi

Depends how I feel. Have used normal multigrade quite often.

All the best

Ok, I'll use normal 10w40 bike oil in the 'box ...

boundy runs 50:1 2-stroke in his gasser too ... but a bit of googling seems people run 40:1 in KTMs ... not really sure why!?!?!? Any ideas???? Confused

Oh yeah, what is the accepted mix for running in ... and how long/far should I be doing it??

My concern is that green laning itself is pretty harsh on a motor, especially when it is as muddy as it is this time of year, I am obviously intending to be doing mega revvs, but there is certainly a lot of load ... which is what you are suppose to avoid when running in (revs being a kind of heavy loading) ... I am thinking I should bang a few road miles in before going offroad ... but realistically how much time do I need to be running it?

Not that I agree (or disagree) but this might prove interesting:

That is for a 4-stroke.

What are you running in? Top end all whole engine?

Warm it up then ride it normally. Job done.

Although this is not based on any technical knowledge.

That is for a manly hardcore mofo 4-stroke ... not a smelly slightly effeminate 2 stroke

Just edited it for accuracy.

Silky's stroker denial is like closet homosexuals in that the ones that protest the most are usually the bummers.

Face it Silky, you love the 2 strokes.

It is everything .... mains, rod/big-end, bore plating, piston, little ends ... i.e. FULL rebuild ... including nicosil ...

It was expensive to get done too ... so I think it would be fool hardy not to run it in with caution/properly ...

Oh and BTW, I asked the place I am getting it done what they think I should be putting in the 'box ... saying I intended to use normal multigrade bike oil ... "oh no" was the reply!! Very Happy I said what do they reccomend? ... long story short, I have got them to put a bottle of the correct stuff in the box ... that and a bottle of 2-stroke (rock oil) .. I already have some castrol, but I figure I am gonna get through a bit and if I uses all their oils, if it goes pop in the first few miles they are gonna have a hard time denying they fecked it up not me?!!?!?

This thread looks to cover it all ??

https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-518687.html

They talk about all that 'heat cycling' and stuff.

I have heard of the heat cycle method - when I paid for the work today, I asked them how they reccomend I run it in ... supposedly they put destructions in the box .... wonder if they state the cycle method?? Thinking

The only thing that needs running in on a 2 stroke is the piston so what's on the website Charlie posted up is still relevant.

Personally, I'd warm it up, take it gentle for 10-20 miles and then forget about it.

I use Castrol MTX transmission oil which i think is semi-syth in all 2 stroke engines i've had in bikes. It made the gearchange feel much more slick and positive on my KMX200, so i've stuck with it really.

As for pre-mix, i would consult the manufactuer's manual, as the ratio can depend on a few things really. I've used 40:1 in all my old trials bikes, and on my old YZ125, and if jetted right they never smoked much when hot.

Just pick your favourite brand of 2stroke pre-mix only fully synthetic oil. I'm not a fan of oils where they say they can be used for both injector and pre-mix systems, as they are often too thin IMO. I do rate Motul, Silkolene, and especially Rock oil fully synthetic oils.
