right I have a thread about upgrade routes for me and was looking for opinions. JonT suggested I upgrade my CPU and overclock

SO

I have an intel core 2 duo 2.66 not overclocking as my memory does not like it at present.

what I would like to see is your time calculating pi using this app

How many loops does it do? Mine got to loop 15 at about 1m30secs and i got bored of waiting

Saying that, i still don't have a clue what it does. I know it times how long it takes to count pi to so many digits (1 million in this case) but what does that indicate, processing power/memory?

About 35 and a half seconds on my laptops trusty Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Centrino(R) inside(TM) CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz. I've had it almost two years now and I still really love this little 12" Samsung.

54 seconds, 6 year old P4 3.06Ghz laptop.

Most of the apps I use are memory and disk bound rather than CPU, so I've no complaints. Only time the CPU takes a real hammering is if I load up too many VST effects in Cubase, but hardware > software when recording anyway.

took 25.xxx minutes to run to 32million on my core 2.

Sond in my other thread managed that in 14minutes, I think that's down to quad core support but its a good argument to change to a Q series chip.

Seeing if I can get his results in here, quite impressive from a geek stand point

Yeh my computer is pretty slow atm, I think my HD is dying. Is there a way to check my HD is running upto speed. It makes a lot of noise which 1 yr old HD shouldn't

Not a particularly useful test tbh as it doesn't really work with multi core processors. Running it on an 8 core Xeon with a single process resulted in 15 seconds, whereas 8 processes took 30 seconds. Something like Passmark or 3Dmark's CPU test would be a better gauge really

I was considering going i7 but to be honest I don't think its really worth the huge outlay for a new MB, RAM and CPU. I will stick with my wolfdale for another year I think.

27 seconds on my old Q6600 quad core running 4 gig (3.5 it shows) off 800mhz ram on an old azus P5 mobo. oddly enough ran best when set to 3 cores taking it to 25 seconds?


EDIT that's the hyper pi not the normal pi if that makes a difference?

Calculating pi relies heavily on clockspeed, no advantage with multiple cores. SuperPi is quicker than HyperPi.

Stock 2.83 vs 3.82 overclock. Note that at stock the multiplier and clockspeed will drop when CPU is not under load.

I looked at PI as most apps are not multicore, certainly if I was looking at it from a business perspective I would look at multithread but windows loads balances most process threads over all the cores so might as well go for raw speed
