To be honest I've never really been in the kitchen other than for coffee, cold beer or pizza, but my nan has been taken into hospital so my mum goes there after work every night which means I'm practically living on my own now... so I went through the cupboards today to work out what I needs to go buy....but what I found was a bit suprising...!

ALL of this is out of date! Laughing some of it back to 2007!

Think I'll be keeping my eye on the cupboards in future Laughing

And NO, the calendar is not mine Rolling Eyes Laughing

Consumers are being duped, as best before and use before dates now have to be put on everything. On the whole the best thing to do is use common sense and take a look at the food stuff before just discarding as more often than not the food will be in perfect condition still.

For example the tinned products are seriously unlikely to be tainted in any way.

...............and remember Mum's know best!! Cheeky!! Rolling Eyes

Haha, can tell you have never lived on your own. I hope you didn't throw it all out because you'll probably get an earful off your mum. From what I can see in that lot, none of it will suffer for being 3 years out of date except maybe what looks like cranberry sauce/jam, but probably only if it's already been opened, the rest will be just fine.

Mmmm I've always been strict with use by dates, I'm sure most stuff is probably fine but I never liked risking it.. these days I'll go a few days over but a few months ++ I just don't think it's worth it Shocked

Tonka, mums do know best maybe but my mum wasn't even aware of it! She can go shopping and come home with 3 bags of food but nothing you can make a proper meal out of! Laughing

I normally do my own shopping and sort my own meals, and whilst all my stuff is in-date I pretty much only know how to cook stuf that can be done in the oven to 20 mins at the same time Laughing cod and chips it is then Thumbs Up

It's all still in the kitchen , mums aware and I sent her a picture which she just laughed at Laughing to be honest I don't like half the stuff there, I don't get time for breakfast in the morning at home so I don't eat cereal, cup-o-soup's are disgusting in date let alone 3 years out of date. I think the cranberry sauce has probably been open for 2 years Laughing if she wants to keep any of it she's welcome to but tbh I don't tihnk she'll eat any of it anyways!

I thought this was going to be a "Dressing up " Thread Embarassed

I had a tin of beans that "expired" in 1998 last month. They were fine.

Man the fuck up.

In Mozam the power went off at 10 and came back at 7, in fucking Africa. We still kept chicken in the freezer for months and still ate it. No one died. Makes me laugh now when people panic about a 2 hour powercut.

Properly frozen stuff will last forever aswell. Seriously. If I could leave food alone long enough, I'd so prove this.

Tinned food also, will never ever die.

Man the fuck up, it's a recession, go 'risk' it Rolling EyesLaughing

Seriously, what's the worst that can actually happen?

I've eaten stuff that was ten years out of date and drank beer that was 7 years out of date that I found buried in the woods.

The dates are a dupe to make people throw them out and buy new.

If it's got mould or smells horrid then don't eat it, give it to your mother.

Wow, you evidently have copious amounts of cupboard space if all that stuff was hiding in there behind the higher turnover stuff!! Very Happy

Most of the stuff pictures will just have best befores.

As others have said, check the food the old fashion way by sniffing it and looking at it. Looks or smells dodgy, bin it, otherwise keep it and eat it.

I'll eat stuff even if it's out of date. I'll check the date on something if i know it wasn't bought recently but if it smells and looks ok, it's going in my cake hole Very Happy

Just think, 30 years ago things never had dates on them and look at how our (well my generation, ~20 years old) parents turned out. That might not be a good thing but they are still alive so can't all be bad Laughing

I have spices as out of date as 1994 that are still usable. Condiment sauces 2007 aren't going to kill you. Only meat and dairy need paying attention to, and even they are obvious when they are dangerously off.

Recession? Thinking Angelic

To be fair, I might keep the spices, they're only 2007 and are probably fine Laughing

I didn't realise you were a complete pussy!

Best before, means exactly that. Best before, it may be slightly different after that time but as has been said, tinned stuff will never die.

Ignore the labels and man up and eat it. There is more risk going to McDonalds than eating that lot

If it's been in my cupboards since 2007 and I've not eaten it, why would I suddenly want to eat it now? Thinking

And me eating a 3 year old tin of fruit that I don't actually want to eat anyway is going to help, how?

I personally only really buy stuff I eat as I tend to shop on a day to day basis so I don't really waste all that much, my mum however will buy random stuff that you can't actually make a meal or desert out of hence it sits in the cupboard uneaten for years Laughing

... er there are at least 4-6 cereal boxes there ... and some ketchup ... I am not sure that is particularly 'random'??? Thinking

The Ketchup... I have a theory on this.. it was bought and placed in the cupboard with good intentions of smothering over chips but fell to the back for 2 years of isolation like Tom Hanks's character in "Castaway" until it was discovered today by a passing adventurer searching for dinner, it's grown a beard and talks to an inanimate jar of paprika which it calls "wilson".... but whilst it is still alive, you wouldn't want to lick it off your chips!

I don't imagine the sauce would be too nice. I have some red sauce (ketchup to you posh bastards) in the fridge, I've had it for a while and it now doesn't taste of red sauce anymore, it's a bit off.

If it's been opened, that's obviously a different matter. But only with some things.
