Like the rats thread, but with the little fuckers that dig your lawn up. I've got what appears to be a single mole at the end of my garden. I hadn't seen any fresh mole hills for about a month but then it appeared again a few weeks ago. I have two of these traps:
https://www.trapman.co.uk/scissor-mole-traps.jpg

I have placed them in what think are in the tunnels but I find it very difficult to find the tunnels - I think the mole digs just under the surface of the lawn. It has made the ground sink in a few places and there are half a dozen hills. This annoys me no end as I only just laid this lawn spring last year.

As the traps aren't working, is there some sort of poison I could put somewhere? It's really doing my head in.

those traps do work, my old mans garden had several of the little bastards, he tried everything, jays fluid (apparently highly reccomended as they hate it, but it didnt work), other chemicals that he was reccomended not sure what

he even got so mad his front garden was collapsing he connected a hose pipe to his van exhaust and tried smoking them out, was funny as fuck watching him do that, knowing it was pointless

but anyway, he borrowed one of those traps you got there, and we caught 2, unfortunately it doesnt always kill them like we found, and you gotta give them a whack on the head to kill um

here is one of them, my bro carried it into my room Very Happy apologise for the poor pic, its an old pic from a very old and shit camera phone, they have very very soft fur....mmmm

That's reassuring to know that they do work. How did you find the tunnels to put them in, and how deep were they? Did you use any gloves to put them in? The box says to use gloves because they can smell human scent. If I pat all the mole hills down it could be anything up to a week before they are dug back up again.

My Grandad was a gardner/park keeper and he could see them moving along their tunnels.

He'd stand there with three garden forks then all of a sudden would pounce, stick one fork in front of it, another behind it then stab the area between the two forks repeatedly with the third one.

The only poison that'll work to kill moles is strychnine laced worms. You need a super mega double special licence with bells and knobs on to be allowed to buy and handle strychnine.

Most areas will however have a mole man who will come round to kill your moles and charges by the head. He would usually have said licence. Ask a farmer.

if you dig up a mole hill, you can see where the tunnels go, or alternativly, the ground will be really soft if there is a tunnel beneath it, like spongy as obviously the moles have excavated Very Happy

cant remember if we wore gloves? may as well if you have some

but yeh, take a walk around your garden, near the mole hills, find where its soft, they arent down very deep, few inches perhaps under the surface, and use a knife or something, cut a hole so you can replace it after, stick your trap in and cover it back over, check it in a few days time or something. As i recall they re-use their tunnels or something so they should pass back through it eventually if they are still there

just be persistant dude, should get them eventually, its a shame, as once you kill them they are really cute, just not when they are destroying your garden Thumbs Up

you just reminded me of when i went to stay with a friend in the sticks about an hour from newcastle, anyway along the roads around there, the farmers always had dead moles hanging from their fences, its like a "who is the best mole hunter" thing they got going haha

my friend up in leuchars had a bad mole problem in his back garden, his dad had spent years, maybe even a decade perfecting the garden and all of a sudden moles started messing it up.

well one day my friend was helping put fertaliser on the sunflower bed when a moles head pop'd up.

after that he knew where the idea of wack a mole came from. mole brains are a pain to clean off apparently.

So you reported them to the police and/or RSCPA so that they got what they deserved for doing something so cruel?

Also get some sticks of cane and stick them in the ground and put a 2L bottle over them .

Scares the moles away because of the noise it makes when the wind blows, i remember my grandma used to do it outside her caravan im pretty sure it works but i may be wrong

Why only strychnine? Doesn't warfarin work or other pesticides work on moles? Are moles super strong and resilient? Are they the next stage of evolution?

Believe it or not... I used to be Gamekeeper.
Killing moles was part of my job - I found that the scissor trap (the traps in your picture) to be affective, but quite hard to set. Once you have found the run, usually 3 or 4 inches below the surface (I used the end of an electric fence steak to locate the run - a pencil would do, just push it in the ground to feel for the runs) cut out a neat section of the earth and put the trap in (setting it) The two really important things to remember:
1. smooth out all the loose earth in the run, that may have fallen while putting the trap in place - moles are super sensitive and won't even go near, they'll know their run has been disrupted.
2. Fit the neat bit of turf you cut out... tightly around the trap so no daylight can get through into the tunnel.
The most affective method i found, was to gas them with Talunex - not sure if this is still legal, as it was ages ago. Poisoning with Strychnine has now been made illegal though.
I know it sounds cruel... but they really are a pain. Where do you live? I could come and kill them for you Laughing- although I'm a bit out of practice and have gone a bit soft since becoming a mum!
If you don't get on with the traps, call your local vermin control man Smile

Edit:

Strychnine (strychnine hydrochloride) was removed from legal sale for all purposes including mole control after 1 September 2006 in the UK.

I used to have a super mega double special licence with bells and knobs on Wink Laughing

A mole ruined my law a couple of summers back.
My neighbor advised me; If you can find the entrance hole (not easy), but some fite lighters down it, they hate them!

I played the waiting game and patched up the mess.

I'm in Sheffield unfortunateley! I think I've been putting the traps far too high - only an inch from the surface. I really struggle to find the runs though so I'll give the pencil a go and stick to the scissor traps.

If I pat all the hills down it could be anything up to a week before they are dug back up, is this normal? I thought they were meant to dig everything back up pretty quickly.

Yes this is normal. The mole 'hill' is the earth dug out to form the run. They make the runs to find worms, and are always making new tunnels - so the new ones may not be in the same place.
Try with a pencil to find the runs... you'll know when you've hit one, as it's suddenly really easy to push. The runs are between the hills, so imagine a line between them. (not always straight though)

You might look a little bit crazy, crawling around stabbing the ground with a pencil... but hey Laughing

Good luck Thumbs Up
