...and there was me thinking about about a 2.5 Mitzi Galant. Mmm, makes you think twice.

Be prepared to get fucked hard, not only with the tax, but what you eventually get for it when you sell it. The end is nigh.

I can't see anything on that list worth crying about in any way.

Perhaps the Mitsubishi, but the rest are just Japanese and Korean white goods.

+1 for sticking with just a bike. I can't see a car being viable for me now for quite a few years.

Hi

Unfortunatly anything interesting is going to be hit with hideous road tax. Certainly a Impreza turbo.

All the best

Most Jap imports are exempt from the banded rates and pay £200ish (due to having no published Euro CO2 figures)..... just something to keep in mind Wink

Hi

I agree, same for older cars. But I expect that gap to be plugged at some point.

All the best

Just to think, vehicles for fun will be something talked about excitedly over a half litre of 1% beer in a state run alcohol addiction centre after a lunch of GM carrots with people from the same work/life zone that you have been bred in to.

Hi

Not sure I agree. Maybe:-

Just to think, vehicles for fun will be something talked about in hushed terms normally reserved for the depraved over a half litre of 1% beer in a state run alcohol addiction centre after a lunch of GM carrots with people from the same work/life zone that you have been bred in to.

People brainwashed to that extent won't find vehicles for fun to be anything other than something to be disgusted about.

All the best

Keith

I'm happy to stick with my 1995 BMW 328 until it finally dies (which, frankly, could be a while).

But yeah, it sucks the way drivers get taxed up to their eyeballs. Most people who drive older cars are the ones who can't afford to replace them with newer cars, so the gov't are just punishing the poor even more Sad

Not really true though, there are plenty of cheap used cars out there that have tiny little engines and come in the lowest tax bands so cost you less than a pre 2001 1.4 litre car will to tax. All it means is that nobody earning NMW will be able to buy and tax anything much bigger than a Daewoo Matiz.

Tax bands has factored heavily in my decisions on what cars to buy every time, if I get rid of my '99 5 series i'd ideally like something that'll probably end up being post 2001 but i'm not sure there's anything I'd like that i'm willing to pay £400 tax on, most cars I would drive will be top band. Looks like i'll be sticking to imports and old cars until they meddle with those tax brackets but I think they will be safe to be honest, though I suspect imports will start to get charged accordingly sooner or later.

1999 Galant

why not just buy the better looking one that just happens to predate the 2001 governmental assreaming deadline?

honestly, can't think of a single car where the 2001> version looks better than the <2000 model Smile

The old Galant/Legnum are nice looking cars, as you say though, the old nicely styled ones fall outside the new tax brackets and the Legnums are all Japanese imports so also evade it. Galants are seriously underpowered though, the 2.5 V6 is not quick given the engine size and horrendous on fuel and again the VR4 is fairly exclusively Japenese imports, only a handful of UK ones.

I've just got a 2004 231 RX8. If you browse the Parker's site their road tax calculater which has just been updated is showing a £30 rise for the 231, from 215 to 245 per year. Wink

Hi

Trouble with running older cars is the spares situation. Plenty of bits will become unobtainable. No fun having your car off the road for 6 months while you try and source an engine mount.

All the best

Keith

I got stung hard when I renewed the tax on my newer Micra...it's because its an auto... Sad

Also the insurance has gone up a full £100 than last year too.

It's a bad time to have no income.
