Hi Guys,

Not posted on here for a while but thought it was about time to get the bike out again.

Anyway, I wanted to change the oil the other day but the oil filler cap seems stuck solid. My bike is a '02 Fazer 600. I didn't want to use mole grips or anything because im not sure if the cap is metal or plastic and I wouldn't want to risk breaking it.

Any ideas/tips as to how to get this thing off?

Regards,
Neil

get a large adjustable spanner, tighten the jaws down onto the cap, and use that to loosen it.

If it resists, give the spanner a few firm taps, that should get it going.

What I would do and what I normally do on my CG is use a long screwdriver or other metal implement to basically leverage the dipstick open using other metal immediately near by. I'm willing to bet large amounts it would loosen it up enough to do the rest by hand.

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

Speaking with my engineering hat on (!) the cap appears to have a fantastic profile for using an adjustable spanner...use a large one so the jaws meet the full length of the cap and make sure it's tightly adjusted to grip it closely...make sure you fit it the right way around so the jaws will tend to close as you rotate it, then slowly apply pressure in the right direction.
At the end of the day, it's not a high cost item and it really does have to come off so go for it!

Mine does this occasionaly. I use a rubber mallet, just tap it very gently and it will come undone. Doing it this way you wont mark or damage it (as long as you are careful)

Hey guys. I managed to do it yesterday. Chipped it a little bit but I managed to do the oil, filter and spark plugs.

When changing the oil I managed to get quite a bit on the exhaust, which was smoking after I took it for a test ride. Will this just burn away or is it flammable and needs to be cleaned off?

Also I'm planning on changing the air filter and I believe I need to take the fuel tank off to do this. I've never done this before and the tank is full. And tips / guide?

Thanks for your help on these seemingly stupidly simple issues lol.

Why not invest in a Clymer or Haynes manual, these books are invaluable, great for novices and confident fiddlers alike. Thumbs Up
