Out of curiosity, How much funding was given when somerset was hit by the floods the year before last?

I appreciate what you're trying to do but surely it would be wiser to donate money where it's needed in this country?

Overseas aid gets the sympathy muscles twitching in more people than flooded Humberside and the likes, albeit people here weren't dying, but I think the main campaigns in virtually every western country has probably done it's job for Haiti, smaller events would be better directed at smaller charities at home or ones relevant to us, like air ambulance.

Every major government these days looks outward for who they can help. I don't know why, it doesn't seem right to me, but it's always about foreign aid, about third world development, about helping migrants and the like. This just gets reflected in society where people get more moral points if they help johnny foreigner than their own compatriots. I'm sure the international movement of great sums of money helps the global capitalist agenda too, but I'd only use that as a factor if I were some sort of conspiracist.

There is very little information on your website. Wink The events page just has a time and a location for each meet, there are no details about the events.

Best I've heard so far is one that they are doing at work.

Donate gold for Haiti.

On the flyer it does mention that you don't have to give gold, any precious metal or jewellery will do. I seem to remember that they had collected £2400 last week. I'm going to set up my own 'donate an organ for Haiti'. I reckon I could get a few quid for a decent kidney.

+1 Although I do think one piece of good has come out of all the coverage: I now know how to say that country's name. I always thought it was high-ee-tee.

Charity begins at home mate.

When the fuck was the last time a Haitian did a good deed for someone from the UK?

/flamemeifyouwantcosIdontgiveashit

Plenty of causes I can think of in my own country that I'd rather ride for, ie - special baby care unit and the Cancer trust.

IIRC I read somewhere how a Haitan baby was flown to the UK for some emergency operation. Now Im not saying I dont want to see a baby saved but seriously, why the fuk is a Haitan baby a priority over our own citizens, some of who no doubt are on waiting lists for operations etc etc. I can no doubt imagine who footed the bill for getting the baby to the uk, the operation and back to Haiti land.

A charity no doubt, either a large one or a badly organised one so that's the majority. Charity money has never been used responsibly or where it could actually do the most good. Why the hell they flew a baby to the UK for surgery is beyond me, telling me that the USA didn't have one hospital able to cope, just a waste of money or a publicity stunt using charity money.

Lets be honest, these shit hole third world countries make there houses out of mud, yet complain they have to walk 52 miles for water. My argument is, why not make your home next to the waterhole and stop asking every other cunt in the world to help you.

If your not intelligent enough to help yourself, dont try and get pity from those who are.

Whilst no one can deny the suffering and cost in Haiti has been high, to date the world donations top £2.4 billion.

Conversely the 2007 floods in Gloucesteshire cost far fewer lives but £3.2 billion, £140 million of which was local government costs in managing the "disaster". All but £60 million of this has been met, unfortunately due to the recession, reduced government funding and broken promises of aid from the Brown administration, over 2,000 local government jobs are at risk of redundancy. So it's either that or double our council tax, I expect it was a similar situation in Kent and will be in Cumbria.

This will affect the local economy and obviously the families involved, I personally don't think this is the time to ask for more money for overseas funds that have billions donated or pledged.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that although I'm a willing giver (via convenant + gift aid) on a monthly basis, there is an awful lot of pressure to "dig deep".

Comic relief, RNLI, Children in Need, Air Ambulance, Poppy Appeal etc, etc... All noble causes no doubt, but how much must we be asked to give?

And if we live in a society where only huge amounts of charitable donations can appear to solve our problems, then surely we're only addressing the symptoms and not the cause?

If you feel you must give then as bazza said on another thread "...donate the petrol/wristband/etc costs direct..."

I have my own problems, working part time, need money for my own baby.

Charity is a rich people's game which makes them feel better about themselves.

My local area needs help too.

Yes but that is none of our choosing. Going by the general tone on this thread I reckon most people would support British industry given the chance. It's the the government and big business that export jobs to the cheapest places and it helps no-one but themselves. It leaves Britain short of jobs, industry and money and saddles us with all the social problems that go along with it. Meanwhile, it leaves those who do create the products working in terrible conditions for piss poor wages. Comparably I wouldn't say either side is particularly worse off than the other though, and I'm certainly not going to feel guilty 'cos my slippers were made by some poor f*cker in some Third World country. The whole situation is typical of the globalist paradox - build a country up just enough for it to serve you, but suppress its development with debt, war and environmental hysteria. And it's not just being effected in the Third World.

We don't make charity donations to China as far as I'm aware. Most child labour and cheap crap comes from Asia not Haiti or starving or HIV riddled African countries. Saying without them we'd have nothing just isn't true?
