 |
|
hey guys. i'm fairly new to biking and loving it . my friend has passed his test and has been riding his 125 for a 2 years now he wants to upgrade to a bigger bike. his 'dream bike' is a GSX-R but he wont get one straight away because he thinks he should build up to that kind of power. so now thats got me wondering what you all got after your 125's to build you experience with bigger engines.
will be interesting to see what you all say
cheers! |

I went from an RG125UN wolf to a ZXR400 H2, back then we didn't have to worry about restrictions. ____________________ Current bikes: suzuki RG125UN wolf. Yamaha MT-07 |

I got an ER5, then an ER6 (sold the 5) AND I also have a Kawasaki 250r. Restriction is up in a month and half. Will keep the 250 for fuel economy |

Alot of people go for 500cc commuter/naked bikes straight after passing. I was even considering this until i saw one riding along and it just looked like a leaner bike. Skinny tyres etc. The main ones are
GS500
ER-5
CB500. |
Can't speak for the other two (only read the lukewarm reviews for them), but the CB500 looks nothing like a learner bike and does not have skinny tyres. Those other two are less powerful and cheaper machines, maybe it's one of those you saw? IMO you should add the GPZ500S to that list too, it's pretty much identical to the CB500 (i.e. more powerful than the other two), but cheaper than the CB500. And with half-fairing (NB: The CB500S - i believe introduced in 1998- another version of the CB500, also has half-fairing).
I went from CG125 to CB500 myself, against advice from a few bikers to go for a 250 (was 17 at the time of receiving the advice mind). Happy i went for the 500 power-wise (it is restricted, for another 2 months anyway). I was very scared of the power for the first few months though. The alternative 250 was a CB250 at 20bhp, which would've been a little bit pants on the power, but despite it now being well over a year, i don't like the weight of my CB500 (it weighs about the same as a 600) and am considering going for something smaller/lighter (and probably sporty, as i don't want to lose the power i've got used to, just the weight). Never heard of anyone complain about the weight of the CB500 before though, so it's definitely just me (i'm not thin and weedy so it's probably more where i live and park it - South Wales, it's all ramps/hills, bumping it up kerbs, uneven/soft ground, valleys - anything and everything to make maneuvering/manhandling the extra weight around more of a pain in the arse).
Oddly enough, people never really seem to recommend the 500s though - it's always 250s / 600s i hear about (for the young and older, respectively). I can recommend a 500 myself though, on the basis that the old ones hold their value damn-near perfectly (so try it, like it, learn from it, grow out of it, sell it, and get your money back), are simple, easy, and excellent for learning mechanics with, and are apparently (be careful; don't pick up a bad high-mileage worn out one like i did) extremely reliable and cheap(er than a 600) to run/maintain/insure. Even more fuel efficient. But are "grown-out of" more quickly.
Swings. Roundabouts.
Just avoid fairings, poorly built and expensive bikes imo - as the probability of dropping is high, and the damage to plastics etc is expensive. An ideal post-test bike is one you can drop at a low-speed, pick up, and finish the ride to your destination without breaking into tears (if you're exceptionally loaded then this could well apply to bikes with fairings and fancy plastics too, but this doesn't apply to many biking newbies imo). ____________________ -- Ingah |

I went from a CB100N to a CB250RS, purely because it was the right price at the right time - I swapped it with my dad From the 250 I went to an XJ900F. I actually wanted the 600, but again, the right price, right time. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Had no biking experience
Did test (33bhp as was 17)
Got ZXR 250 (40-45 BHP)
Got CBR 600 F Sport (100-105ish? BHP) a couple months later (never restricted it) Kept for around 18 months.
Got Kawasaki ZX6R B1h (115BHP (had print out)) after a few months off biking (after restriction period) had it for a couple months then got knocked off filtering, took me a year to rebuild it (lack of funds) then rode it for a month or two then sold it
Got Yamaha R1 after a couple more months off biking. Sold that now too  ____________________ || Past: 1991 Kawasaki ZXR 250 ~ 2003 Honda CBR 600 F Sport ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1999 Yamaha R1 ~ 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R J ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1998 Honda VTR1000F Firestorm ~ K1 GSXR 600 Track bike ~ K6 GSXR 1000 ~ 2006 Speed Triple 1050 || Current: 2005 R1 https://www.adrucore.co.uk |
