Had my bike a couple of weeks now and want to venture onto some greenlanes.

I have done quite a bit of googling trying to find a map of the BOAT/greenlanes in mid devon but cannot find any.

Does such a map exist?
I don't want to go on any that are for people, horses and cycles only.

Yes, such maps exist, go to WH Smiths or other decent bookshop and buy the 1:50,000 scale Landrangers for the areas you are interested in. Look on the key for rights of way info and try riding the 'Byways Open To All Traffic' to start with.

Thanks for the replies.

I was going to Smiths tomorrow anyway so will look out for a
1:50,000 scale landrangers map.

I did find the Devon TRF whilst Googling last night. Not sure I want to join a group yet, maybe at a later date.

I am near Tiverton but no spring chicken. I'm in my forties now.
I had an XL600R when I was 17 and having a mid life crisis so got the XT to try and recapture those days Smile

I would seriously reccommend contacting the TRF. It's not like joining a normal bike club, it's a very serious organisation fighting very hard to keep BOATS and such open and unrestricted.

They are very experienced in dealing with people new to the sport and guide routes suitable for your experience and offer all the help and advice you'll need. Maybe try your first ride with them before going off alone?

I intended to go by myself firstly, but was very keenly discouraged from doing so, I'm glad I heeded their advice. A little guidance and navigational help goes a very long way.

IIRC the Devon TRF are the biggest group in the country - 240ish members and very active with rides, trips and talks etc. We have a couple who venture over to join in with us in Dorset and vica versa.

Seriously, if I was you I would get along to one of their meets and see what they say and are like. Dorset has a mixed age group ranging from mid twenties upwards, but majority around 40's.

If you like it, joining costs £40 for the National TRF and whatever they charge in Devon (Dorset is £10). They will mark up that Landranger for you and keep you up to date on all legal issues regarding any closures etc. They will also have rides that you can join in with - nothing clever, fast paced and enduro like - a good days riding at a trail pace, ideal as an introduction.

There are a few threads on here about the good and bad things surrounding the TRF but I think you'll find Devon to be one of the least cliquey groups.

Funny in what way wheely?

I ordered a O/S landranger map for the area I am interested in off the O/S website last night (free 1st class postage) in case my small local useless WHSmiths did not have any.

It did have some so I looked inside and read the key. The red X and . are apparently for motor vehivcles.
Not many of those lanes on the whole map.

Use it as a start.

There are other legal green lanes too, they are not shown on the ordnance survey map in the same way as they are recorded differently.

Newer OS maps show some as small dots. You'll see them on the key as 'other routes with public access'. Most are unclassified carriageways (but not all). This means they are on the highway authorities list of streets along with other minor roads (some sealed, some greenlanes).

OS will not state on the map whether these other routse are legal for motor vehicles or not, that's where local knowledge (TRF etc) is handy. It's that or go and research them yourself at the county council, TRF seems easier to me.

In some counties there are hardly any Byways on the defnitive map (where the OS gets the information from). Each county was responsible for finding and mapping them. Some did a pretty good job (Wiltshire) some just didn't bother even though it was a legal requirement for 50 plus years (Suffolk/Hertfordhire). Lots of main roads on old maps are now merely footpaths because of this.

Think most of its been sorted now, but some people had fallen out with a member and some officers decided to stand down.

I like to stay out of the politics side of it, im happy to pay the money and ride.

Just thought i'd warn you incase things seemed a little strange, its normally a good group with very frequent ride outs.

Thanks for the replies.

As you say it is a start.
I got map 181 Minehead and Brendon hills.
There are 2 sections I have found marked on the map.

25 MPH maximum is that right?

25mph is what the TRF say, there aren't any official speed limits on byways so I'd assume they count as national speed limit. You're not going to find any speed traps, but you might find horses or 4x4s coming the other way so just use your judgment about how fast is appropriate.

I have ridden around there, some lanes are easy, others a beginner will struggle on (rock steps covered in moss and dampness for instance). If you are going to ride alone, take a decent mobile phone with plenty of battery charge, although I have been signalless in some of the valleys around Minehead before now.

I'm assuming you will be doing it on an XT6? A capable bike but quite heavy to be manhandling if you fall a lot. One bike drop equals about 1 hour in a gym. The second is like 5 years hard labour etc.

If you don't want to bother with the TRF, try finding someone else to ride with, even if it's just company to each end of the lane. That way if you don't reappear someone will know where to send the search party.

I agree with this Thumbs Up

It's a common misconception that off-roading is just sitting on a bike, it's not. It can be very tiring until you get used to it.

Picking your bike up when it's 'wheels high' can be exhausting. Also, it's surprisingly easy to get stuck beneath your bike if you fall awkwardly - I've seen it happen to the best, so not just beginners.

Seriously if I was you I'd make sure you went out with at least one other rider. Personally, I think it's more fun to ride out in a group, but I can understand others don't. However, I think you need to be a pretty competent rider and familiar with your route to get away with it.

Definately.
Its not a good idea to ride alone ... much more fun with others.
The following can and does happen:
(as shown here by the SE Off Road Muppets):

You could fall off and hurt yourself. If alone you will have no one to stand there and laugh at you !:
https://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/silky666/Bike%20Stuff/tatters_hindhead_fallen.jpg

You may fall down a steep hill . If alone there will be no one to capture you falling in a girly manner:
https://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/silky666/Bike%20Stuff/fall.jpg

You may break down and need your bike tipping upside down (this is known to fix all mechanical issues):
https://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/silky666/Bike%20Stuff/tip_bike.jpg

You may find yourself stuck in a tree. Much more fun as a group:

Thanks for the information.

You are correct the XT600 is quite heavy, 370lbs ish.

When I was 17 I had an XL600R which I think was 295lbs ish and I only weighed just over 10 stone then. No electric start either.

I can remember getting into a few awkward situations on my own.
It was quite a struggle to pick the bike up especially when on uneven ground.

I am going to be taking it easy though, nothing too adventurous, really just want to pootle along some flat lanes.

I went to the Tamsin Jones talk last night organised by the Devon TRF. Seemed like a great bunch of people to me. There was a very brief whispered mention of a 'tiff' but that's bound to happen in a large group of folk I guess. All very friendly, chatty and interesting - I'd say get along there. Thumbs Up

Devon greenlane maps can be found here.

The TRF in general are a great bunch. The Devon lot aren't very welcoming from my direct experience.

YMMV
