Hi
Well for my insurance this year i went with Swinton as they were cheapest, i was going to do it as a deposit and 10 payments to make it easier on the pocket but after receiving their terms for this i nearly shit. To quote just one part "On each occasion that you fail to make, or ensure a payment is made on the due date, you must pay a default charge of £24. " Also if you fail to return this agreement signed by the date we specify then you will incur a £12 charge. I had 12 days to return it along with proof of no claims, however the letter was dated 20th on one in the envolope and 26th on the other . One girl said my renewal letter would not be enough for proof and another said she woulds phone Devitts to check verbally.Fuck me i decided to pay in full as 2 late payments could cost me £50, im now skint for 2 months but it seemed the safe option, so a warning to others about some of Swintons charges. It does not surprise me that people try to screw there insurance over after shit like that. Robbing bastards.

Well you could have your pay cocked up or loose your job and forget about the payment due to worry, you may miss calculate your balance and not have enough in the account Rolling Eyes , could be plenty of reasons i think it also covers a payment being late, i get paid on the last friday of each month which sometimes goes past the 28th so i have to pay my mortgage manually as it only goes to the 28th for automatic payment for an example.

Let me just reiterate:

The way I see it, if you're worried you might miss a payment, don't take out credit. Simple as that.

This is why the world is in such crisis with bad debt etc because people don't realise you actually have to pay when you take out credit. The credit organisations don't do it for their health, they are there to make money.

Thats not really the point though is it. Some things are beyond your control, is it fair to be penalised for it and so harshly?

Swinton are shit, I've just cancelled with them. I had a policy with them for the full 12 months, they claimed they couldn't get in touch (although I did it online and I know the form wouldn't have allowed itself to be submitted with out a telephone number.)

The guy on the phone said he looked me up in the phone book, (I'm not in the phonebook) and got 'someone else with the surname broon living in the same street'. The up shot is, the renewal is £100 more than the previous years premium but because its already started, I have to live with it.

He told me if he cancelled it it would incur a £50 fee. He also said Swinton had already paid R&SA the premium (£350) so they'd be out of pocket, I waffled on about some distance selling stuff then told him the new quote I had via confused.com was for £171 FC and was from R&SA anyway.

I asked how they would collect the cancellation fee with out a direct debit mandate, he said he didn't know.

You can be an apologist for big business if you want. But they deserve everything they get and for what its worth; I don't think credit in the form of £200 for insurance was responsible for the credit crunch.

Thumbs Up

Well they warn you that they will do and they are not alone in doing this ALL ins co will charge if a DD payment fails. It costs them money, so why should they not pass it on.
It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that the money is there ready....
If they really wanted to be arsey, they could simply say a missed payment = revoked ins......

First off, just because all them do it doesn't excuse the activity. If all of us decided to not bother with insurance at all, it would still be wrong.

Second, the charges they incur (same goes for banks) doesn't reflect the actual cost to them. In terms of responsibility, you're right, but things happen out-with your sphere of responsibility. Is it to much to expect some leeway built into their systems to take account of that? No, what you get is some brain-dead moron parroting what they see on the computer screen in front of them.

And finally, I wouldn't mind if they revoked it, at least then you could vote with your feet. The downside is, they'd charge you for it, so they win coming and going. How is that fair for the consumer?

I think you're trying to defend the indefensible.

Thumbs Up

Yeah.

I sort of did a mental u-turn after I typed that.

Wink

PS: This will be the first time I've been asked for a copy of my license when taking out insurance. I hate the 21st century, it's so complicated and untrusting.

Blimey, people miss payments or payments fail for many reasons other than struggling to meet outgoings due to being a credit whore. Problems with wage payments, a momentary memory lapse meaning you forget to transfer money, slight overspend and forgot to compensate, shared account and partner to blame, the list can go on.
