So i've been doing CAD now for near on 8 years. Im not totally bored of CAD itself but because of my current job, im looking for something else.
I currently spend over £200 on fuel a month because my current job i grabbed after going travelling in 2008. Cut to the present and im struggling, the company is failing, management are getting shitty and im spending too much on fuel.
I got a bit stressed when ive been looking online as i seem to be in a bit of a weird situation.
2008 i went travelling and came back, i left my job before because they wouldn't allow me the time off. I was doing 3D cad after i had some training. I came back and landed a good 2D cad vacancy.
So at 26 ive done 3D cad but now i cant just sit down, log on and do everything, i need more training again. So a lot of 3D work i cant go for. 2D is what im best at but its a dying trade.
That makes me feel a bit shite.
Anyways, im not re-locating, im in a wicked area...i need something closer. I see loads of other jobs out there but i dont know what someone with 8 years of CAD experience could go for that isn't...well...CAD!
Im creative when it comes to design work but i must admit mathmatically im shite....i do get by with my mechanical knowledge but would more at ease drawing something up without so much restrictions. Know what i mean??
Its a tough one, ive come to a bit of a blank, im out of ideas...or maybe i didnt have the ideas to start with. I really need some more options to look at than typing in the same thing all the time.
What a long post! sorry.

Website design??
I would say Graphic Design, but as that's my field and I'm getting pipped to the post by InDesign boffs straight from uni, that isn't an option (unless you are qualified).
How about going into a different area of engineering?
Depends it kinda depends what you want in the future...do you want to stay in the UK?
Luckily you have youth on your side, so changing your direction now won't be too hard. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

You could always look at something like engineering as you can read a bloody drawing at least maybe something along the lines of starting a CNC career? Try making the things you have spent years drawing will give you a designers edge later in life either that or an application engineer in the cad world? My AE loved his job when we both moved from manufacturing into CAD sales (solidworks) or as said something along the lines of graphic design.....never been more need for them out there than there is now! ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Id give cncs a miss just been made redundant a year back from hampson precision automotive as a cnc setter/operator.
Cnc engineering firms are having a real hard time at the moment with china and india under cutting us at every turn.
The new maini plant hampson set up in india put the nail in the coffin of the uk plants wigans on the way out skems clingin on but only just with minimum staff. Same story at the first place i worked Kirkham engineering there on 3 day weeks now
Not to sure how cnc woodworking factorys are doing could be worth a look.
i work in a box factory now and one of the cad designers just designed a box which opens with a flic of the wrist. Sounds silly but its just got us £6m of sales. ____________________ DL650 Vstrom 2004
