Today I went for my hair cut about 3 mile from my house and when I came out it was a sunny warm day and I was very tempted to not where the helmet on the way home (no roads were above a 30 limit).

Thoughts?

I felt it was good road conditions very dry and clear, low speed limits,

and i was confident it was not a endorsable offence.

obviously i didn't want to fill my helmet full of hair in the end i was a girl and put my lid on as i thought "yer i might not get 3 points for no lid but im sure a pc plod would go over the bike with a fine tooth come"

So i want to know your opinions, we in the uk seem to have it drilled into us that no lid = instant head explosion above 10mph

just wondering if i was a complete cock for thinking like this or if there is other like minded peeps?

The Americans are idiots.

I'm sure it'll be great while you don't crash.

But imagine doing even 50MPH+ and coming off. No matter which body part you land on your head will knock around. You'll thank the Government then for making you wear your helmet.

It takes jack shlt to hurt you seriously if not kill you when your head is involved.

Take it easy. Thumbs Up

As was said very quickly, people do those speeds on pushbikes quite happily.

In my opinion, if someone doesn't want to wear a lid, that should be their choice. If they're old enough to be allowed to ride a motorbike then they're old enough to decide for themselves if they want to wear a helmet or not.

When riding outside of the EU l offen dont wear mine when riding around town as its normally far too hot to be stuck in a full face helmet can get away with it there too.

yes I'm aware of the dangers of coming of at 50+

I was trying to make it clear that the roads i would have taken are all 30mph or under zones.

I would never go out for a blast or on any fast roads. my riding style would of been altered and a lot less throttle.

As mentioned it would not be much different to push bike speeds.

I do ride around my street sometimes with no helmet on after a little service or wash just to check its all running right, I would not consider this much more dangerous?

i go up and down my road after a wash and lube just to check its all ok and get the water out, i dont do much more than 20 though, and its not like i have to deal with any unexpected hazards found on the main road (its a very quiet street)

Me and my friends always say, even if it wasnt the law we would probably still wear a helmet.

yer to be honest i always say i wouldn't go out without a helmet on, but today was very tempting as my lid was new this week and i didn't want to soil it with horrid itchy hair.

also i would never let the gf on the back without a helmet... must just have more respect for her than i do myself, I don't even let her on wearing jeans couldnt bare to see her hurt and know it was my fault.

Having smacked the back of my head on the road before at 20 and feeling it hurt (despite wearing a well-fitting, nearly new helmet), i don't think it's wise. I suspect i would've, instead of minor pain, died had i not been wearing one.

People can die from falling over and hitting their head at walking pace (2mph)... So i think not wearing one will be fine unless you come off - where even at 20-30mph i suspect the impact will kill you unless you are lucky enough not to hit your head or have the impact softened somehow.

Besides which it's not all about survival - you can easily kill part of your brain, and lose any part of your mental capacity as a result.

Hell, even an open face/flip front is better than none.

I've ridden crossers when I was younger with no lid but I wasn't arsed then, you think you're invincible at 14.

When I had my RS a few years ago, I used to ride about in shorts an tshirt and trainers. Although it felt awesome in the summer, nice and breezy, when I got my ZX, I tried it and a) I felt like a tit when I saw other bikers look dis-approvingly and b) it felt completely unsafe.

I always make sure I have the right gear on, I've only ever crashed a bike at speed twice myself and twice pillion and I've escaped with nothing more than a few scratches. My luck won't last forever.

At least it wasn't the infamous patch of diesel! Laughing

As for not wearing a lid. Well, I am guilty of riding in smart shoes, suit trousers and also riding without gloves 30 percent of the time.

I have also crashed wearing no gloves, smart shoes and suit trousers at 30mph and tbh I'd probably still ride the bike wearing that again anyway.

The one thing I wouldn't go without is a helmet. The helmet is just as important at protecting neck injuries, not just head ones.

For those that say you don't wear a helmet when testing out a bike. I have been guilty of doing so myself but probably not anymore. Tbh testing a bike that may or may not be fixed is probably a really bad time not to wear gear.

It reminds me of this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFD9az2eAv0

But yeah, wear what you want. I know I do.

Always wear a helmet. Even the wind at 20 - 30MPH can be difficult on your eyes to the point where you aren't concentrating as much on the road as you should be when you have to close your eyes.

I can't believe anyone would even consider this. Even on a bicycle you have to wear a helmet by law. This is partly because of the speed of the cars you are riding amongst and partly because it isn't that hard to reach 30MPH! Folded arms Hair is no excuse. Good to hear you haven't been stupid yet.

That's wrong about helmets being mandatory, but they're a good idea.

Anyone who says they don't want to wear a helmet because of their hair is clearly a sissy and deserves to get the piss taken out of them.

I tried riding a few miles years ago with no helmet (middle of the countryside), just to see what it was like. I had long hair and a fairing. Due to some strange aerodynamics my hair blew forward all the time and I could hardly see where I was going. Not quite how I imagined it would be.

I have 2 helmets. Full Face and Flip front so if i want the wind in my face i go flip front.
I cycle the 2 miles to work daily and now even ride a cycle helmet.
I do go by the highway code as a cyclist but it's the other dickheads on the road.

Helmets all the way. Sorry that just sounds gay Embarassed

It's not strictly illegal no, but the law is on the side of those wearing a helmet. Because the highway code recommends the use of a cycle helmet (in the same way it recommends seat belt use) if you were to have an accident on a bicycle and it were to go to court you will basically be looked upon as neglecting your own safety as the courts have decided before. Therefore, it's a stupid idea because even if you got hit by another vehicle you wouldn't even have the chance to rob the insurance companies, which we all know ought to be done at every available opportunity.

AFAIK you don't get points for not wearing a helmet it's just a £60 fine I think.

Which is why I chose to wear gloves and a helmet on a push bike. Even then it really hurts falling off in shorts.
Having said that I still think people should have the choice whether to wear a helmet or not.

Yes, and if you aren't 100% legal in all other ways I'd avoid it. I got a nasty grilling from the police (and a £30 {edit} fine) for just riding up and down my street with no lid.

{edit} Just noticed, I'm MarJay again! Wooo! Smile {edit}

I can understand the appeal or not wearing one.

Like in America, great weather, long roads (most in reasonable condition) with loser speed limits.

If I was just riding down a long straight road with good weather etc... I wouldn't wear one, to enjoy it to the full.

But I do agree it should be choice, even though I'd wear one anyway most of the time.
