Scam.

Wording is classic classified ad scammer - 'price and present condition'. I expect both of these were in the advert already!

Cheque will appear to clear then bounce, or they will send a cheque for more than the price and ask you to send the difference by western onion etc.

steveh,

My name is Mister Umbogo. I am the solicitor for the first national Diamond mine in Bulowayo. Due to the political and economic circumstances in our country we are left with 4.5 million US dollars in a bank account. If we convert this to Zimbabwe dollars we are liable to lose much of its value due to inflation.

We require the assistance of a helpful but neutral westerner with access to a bank account who can help us to direct the funds away from the diamond mine.

In order for you to take advantage of this amazing opportunity, you must furnish us with your bank details including account number, sort codes, passwords and card details. Once we have this we can start moving the funds via our friendly mutual funds across Africa. You will be allowed to keep 25% by way of a fee and on the basis that you will not mention this transaction to the authorities.

I await your prompt reply.

Mister Jacob Umbogo

They scam works because they send an international cheque for more than the goods. They ask you to send them the balance after it has "cleared" (goods are never collected).

However although the money will appear in your account after about 3 days it can take months for a international cheque to clear. When it fails to clear the bank removes the full amount from your account and you have just lost whatever you sent via western union.

If you have a genuine need to to present a forign cheque you can pay for a faster process although in general a bank transfer would be what honest people would use.

I belive most banks are wise to this and advise you on deposit but I dont suppose they all get caught.

Regards
C

I got this gem from a bike advert:

Quote:
Hello,

I am Nick tosches, I saw your advert placement for sale and am highly interested in it because have been in need of this certain product for so long. Kindly get back to me asap with the price and the condition of the product for sale.

Warmest Regards,
Nick Tosches.

I humoured him by sending a reply, low and behold nothing. Then I get:

Quote:
GET BACK TO ME!

a few days later.

Scamming gold.

Ha ha Laughing

I had the same type of email saying they would ship the bike to america and pay all charges and offer me £2k for a 2005 beaten up YBR.

This was on facebook marketplace and the picture on the profile was of an absolutely stunning girl. I sent them an email saying pay me via paypal and got a reply saying no i need your bank details... blah blah blah!

Sent made up bank details and just played along for a bit out of boredom. Eventually they stopped emailing me, gutted because I thought Id made a friend
