Hi all

Took my 1000 firestorm out today and whilst idling at traffic lights, the bike got hot (just below the red zone) and the fan kicked in. It sorted itself out once i started riding again. Being as its only March and still pretty cold, is this normal?

Thanks in advance

It could well be normal. If there's no air flowing through your rad it won't matter how cold it is outside; eventually it will overheat.

Provided your fan sorted it out you're probably ok.

When did you last change the coolant?

I guess this was in a urban area?

Bikes run hotter there anyway so when you stopped at the lights the fans kicked in, it's not big deal.

The other thing with the 'Storm is the side mounted rads. I wouldn't have thought they'd be as effective as a front mounted rad at low speed.

I never had any issues with my firestorm.

Have you checked your coolant level? IIRC the res is between the cylinders....

It is easy on most bikes - you just need to locate the drain bolt and the filler cap (not the same as the cap on the expansion tank). Drain the coolant, flush through some clean water and refill with 50/50 coolant and water (unless its pre-mixed coolant in which case don't dilute it!).

If there's anything special about how to do it on a firestorm I'm sure someone will jump in! (or get a workshop manual)

Its worth doing if you don't know the history of the bike as after 2-3 years it starts to attack the engine.

If you don't know the history you might want to change the oil too Smile

Changing the coolant's not something I've bothered with on any of my bikes. It's never caused an issue. Not saying you shouldn't, but I've never had a problem not doing it.

Ive already done the oil and filter, i do that straightaway when i get a new bike. Will prob attempt the coolant change just to be sure. The level is ok by the way. Thanks for your responses.

Fair enough. It's just one of those things that's so easy and cheap it's not worth not doing Smile

Some engines are more prone to problems than others. It seems that my car engine is one of those that is known to pop head gaskets if the coolant isn't done.

As long as it doesn't go into the red zone then it should be OK... however there could be an air lock in the system. It might be worth removing the pressure cap (when the bike is cold), starting it and running it for a little while (not so long as to warm the bike up) to see if any air bubbles are pushed up to the surface. The water pump will help to move the air around the system, and with it not pressurised the air won't be trapped as easily.

Might be worth a go anyway. Obviously be careful though, you've got the potential to get hot coolant over you.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
