Removing your mirrors & indicators

As far as I'm aware, you don't legally have to have mirrors or indicators on a bike?

There's a lad round here on a GSXR1000 without them and it does look allot better but at what cost?

Are people who do that mad? I know the bike looks better but it's not the cleverest thing to do is it?

That's right, you don't have to have mirrors or indicators.

It's not that hard riding without them, you just have to change your riding habits a bit.

That would do my head in constantly looking over my shoulders and doing arm signals. All that so the bike looks a bit better, don't think it's worth it to be honest.

I hate not having mirrors, it's a real pain in the arse and definitely increases your chances of having an accident in my opinion. That said, if you want to pretend your Valentino Rossi they'll have to come off won't they

I think you have to have indicators on any bike manufactured after 1986 unless it's a bike intended for partial offroad use (Enduro) to be legal. Of course that might just be an MOT requirement which often bears no resemblance to road legality.

On naked bikes I don't "do" mirrors, without exception they look awful. However on faired bikes I usually keep them as I think they look far tidier.

AFAIK you can remove the indicators, but you must also remove the switch.

The MOT requires them to be working if all or part of the system is there.

Exemptions
If direction indicators are fitted they must meet the requirements of this inspection, but need not be fitted to a machine which:
. cannot exceed 30mph / 50kph, or
. was first used before 1 August 1986, or
. 'off road' machines which are designed
to carry only the rider.
. 'off road' machines with side car designed to carry the rider and one passenger in the side car.

off road machines are constructed or adapted primarily for use off roads (whether by reason of its tyres, suspension, ground clearance or otherwise).


I read that as meaning that any road vehicle that can exceed 30mph, first used after 1 August 1986 must be fitted with indicators

With indicators, if the bike is equipped to have them, they must work. That means, if it has lights, carriers, switches, or wiring, the whole lot must work, and work properly. If it as none, then it does not need them so long as none of the components are present. So, if you don't want indicators, you can strip off all of the parts and wiring that supported them, perfectly legally.

Today, I did do, no mirrors. Took them off and went for a ride to see what it's like, after force of habbit and kept looking down to check my mirrors for about 20 minutes, I got used to it.

After another 40 minutes of riding around and doing millions of lifesaves, the novelty wore off. I also didn't like the fact I couldn't see what was behind me. You can't pop wheelies, do dodgey takeovers and the likes without having a sneaky glance to see if the po po are right behind you.

Doesn't particularly make the bike look any different either, as I was riding and noticing mirrors on cars passing by, I actually thought they add to the design of a car and look better with them, ha.

I never ride with mirrors i just dont like them on the bandit it just shacked and you couldnt see anything with it. On the superdream I didnt have indicators and seem to be able to ride through towns and citys fine and not have a problem with people not seeing me. You just have to use road positioning more.

To be honest I could probably get away without using indicators, one of my bad riding habits is I rarely indicate, trying to rectify this but I'm still quite bad for it. However I couldn't imagine riding without mirrors, saved my ass yesterday. I was on the motorway in the middle lane about to move to the outside line to pass a vehicle. I do a shoulder check + indicated all is well, however as I'm pulling the manoeuvre I notice a tit in a beemer pull into the fast lane just behind me, he was going a lot faster than me so if I had continued the move I doubt he'd have stopped in time :/.

I was always planning to take the mirrors of my GSXR as they often get in the way filtering - I'd actually quite like some mechanism to fold them in electrically from the handle bar .

Have often ridden bikes with neither because they didn't have them - you get used to it and generally get a better idea of what's around you. The hand-signals can be a minor annoyance, but again you get used to it.

Speaking of arm signals, and sorry for taking the thread a little off-topic, I find a lot of other road users don't know what the 'slowing down' arm signal means. Like when I give way to someone wanting to exit a junction, I slow down, wave my arm up/down and they just don't come out and have a blank stare on their faces. Anyone else encounter that? They'd come out if I flashed my headlight or gesture with a sideways head nod though, even though they don't mean that.

I'm wondering (not being a safety nazi/road captain, just interested in why it is) how it has gotten to be that the majority of folks on the road flashes for a reason other than what the highway code advises?

None of the bikes I have owned have had mirrors. Can be annoying if you are leading a ride and you have to keep looking back to check you haven't lost anyone.

Always had them on my bikes. A mate had none on one of his old ones. Didn't seem to make much of a difference to be honest.

I have no mirrors or indi's on my bike.

Mainly because when I came off 3 of the indicators snapped, and one mirror has stripped threads so took them both off. Just means more lifesavers.

never used mirrors on my vfr or my r6 or my 636, and wont be using them on my sp1/2 when i get it. i now just leave a big enough gap infront of me before i take a life saver to check i wont pull infront of anyone. i` never ride without indicators though. granted i do use very small flush mounted indicators on the front of my bikes and usually a intergrated rear brake light on the rear.
