Pot holes will ruin my biking enjoyment this year.

Just been out for my first lunch time ride of the year.

What was once a nice enjoyable blast over the moores, is no more.

Where last year, I would know of the 3 or 4 pot holes. Today I must have seen in excess of 200. No longer can I keep to the left for a right hander for fear of a pot hole, nor can I lean too much going in to corners for fear of pot holes. There's far too many to hope to remember them all.

Some of the potholes are just wheel width and maybe 6" deep, lots would easily have a biker off.

It got to the stage where I could not give the road ahead the concentration it deserverd as all my attention was on the road surfaces.

My commute has also become very dangerous some pot holes being over 6' (Yes that feet in diameter).

I don't know about the rest of the UK, but West Yorkshire is not worth riding though at the moment. In particular Kirklees, the
volume of pot holes instantly reduces, when you cross in to Calderdale or Oldham, i've no idea what they've done to their roads. (No salt or poor tarmac?)

I dread to think what North Yorkshire is like.

Yeah, round my way in Herts is pretty terrible too at the moment.

Seem to spend 50% of the time going around corners, and the other 50% dodging the potholes.

It's the same down here too.

In case anyone didn't know it's caused by water getting into cracks in the road, freezing and then expanding making small cracks into big ones.

They weren't too bad until the insane amount of snow we had.

You can tell the council and they are supposed to go along and fill any you tell them about. Whether they do it or not is another matter.

yep they had my mate off on his xjr1300 yesterday. it was brand new with 60miles on clock and hes flipped it...

dont worry they will soon put a lovely coat of tar down and then cover it in tonnes and tonnes of loose gravel crap

Report them to your local council.

I suffered a puncture to my car the other week (dark, rain, pothole in a shadow) and have applied to the council for the cost.

Many of the potholes are a result of previously poorly-maintained road surfaces letting in water. There were already lots of potholes before the BIG FREEZE, well, a couple of weeks of unusually cold weather.

Lots of potholes in our area too - and reporting them to the council seems a pointless exercise cos little or nothing appears to get done.

I'm getting to learn where the worst ones are on my regular routes, and having to adjust my riding slightly.

I'm living in Southampton and I reported the ridiculously poor road surface down my road in about November. It's only got worse since then... You think riding over them on a motorbike is bad, try it on a bicycle with no suspension! I'm sure it's caused me permanent damage; but I'll be fantastic at the slalom bit when I do my bike test

Yeah, and when a road just needs completely resurfacing it gets left even longer. I do understand that the insane winter we had has exacerbated the problem, but things (at least around here) were pretty bad to start with.

It's not bad where I live, but seeming as I live in the most south east part of the country it did get the least snow.

There was however a massive pot hole immediately outside of my drive way after the main lot of snow in december / janurary and the council filled it up within a day or two of the snow melting, which was nice of them

So no complaints from me, the roads around here are still a blast!
