Went to tighten up my chain today as it was looking a bit saggy, sadly run out of adjustment now so need to put a new one on Crying or Very sad

I have a new one 'in stock' so it isn't a problem (well apart from being a bit of a PITA to do), but I was hoping it would last until summer so the new one didn't get all manky with winter crud ....

If it was split-link I'd just take a link out for now to tide me over!! Wink Laughing

Anyone else try and make things like chains, pads and tyres* last till the better weather so you can get some nice ones on there for the better weather- or at least not prematurely knacker the new ones in the poor weather?? Thinking



*I don't mean running them down below legal limit as that would be especially silly with bad weather!! Wink ... just not bothered if they are squared off/low ...

BUY a 2-3 tooth bigger back sprocket Very Happy .Looks like a quick fix.

hummm ... I do have a 1t larger front sprocket in the spares dept .... Thinking

(Depends on what bike it was as to whether I'd feel comfortable doing it.)

i've taken a couple of links out before now because i was major skint, served me ok for a couple of months till i could afford 1 ,now i just change them when they need it.

Buy a rivet-link for the new chain you have, cut off a side-plate from the old chain to split it, fit new chain to old chain using rivet link (not riveted though), pull new chain round using old chain then remove old chain from rivet link and join new chain.

You could just buy a rivet-link for the old chain and then cut a pair of side-plates out to shorten it but there's only a few minutes work on top to thread the new one round.

Could save you from busted cases if the old chain lets go Wink

Er, I am not sure you have twigged what the problem/situation is Wink

I am not at a loss how to break the old or fit a new chain ... I am not without a rivvet link in the new chain box ... ... I just was trying to put off fitting the new chain until the weather was better - as I didn't want to gunk up my new chain in winter muck ... Sad

Now I have no more adjustment in the old chain .. that really is the final telltale it is time to change it!! Laughing ... so it has forced my hand to do something NOW Crying or Very sad

So I will fit the new chain (and some almost new sprockets I have).

To be honest, it is on the 650, so although I did consider it, I am not really prepared to push my luck with cutting it shorter* ... but have been known to do that many times in the past with 'tidlers' to get a few more miles out of a chain!! Cool


*just had a look and I actually have a split and rivet link in the new chain kit - so technically could use the split link to re-make the old endless chain if I wanted (don't like the idea of one link being far less worn than the others mind you Shocked) - but bearing in mind its gonna have to cope with what 60odd hp, it isn't worth it really is it!! Wink

Making things last longer so I can change them in better weather just ensures that the better weather takes longer to arrive.

Hence I landed up wearing bike gear changing suspension arms on the car in the snow just before Christmas.
