I got a letter through this morning...

46 in a 30. /slap!

Up until now I had managed to avoid this scenario for 6 years!

So I'm gonna need some advice as I've not dealt with a speeding fine before. I did a quick search but nothing immediately came up that was of any help and I didn't want to spend too long festering away in BCF's dusty archives.

Erm the letter only says that I was doing 46 in a 30, what road I was caught on, and the time. It doesn't say what I was caught by and what the penalty is. Are they waiting for me to admit liability first?

There are no speed cameras down that road and I wasn't pulled over if it was an under cover copper. Are they supposed to pull you, or can they just send a letter? I'm going to take a ride down there later on today and see if there is adequate signage. Not that that will help me even if there isn't, as it's a built up area so of course it's gonna be a 30.

What is best to do, just fill in the form and wait for their decision? I don't think I will get offered that speed awareness course thing because it's quite a lot over the limit. It says I'm not allowed to see the picture yet either so I can't ask for that.

As said, not been in this situation before so not sure what to do. But as speeding fines are quite common, I'm hoping it won't take somebody too long to explain what happens next.

Thanks. Thumbs Up

I think that is over the speed threshold which may require a court appearance.

IIRC anything over 40% over the limit = court. Pepipoo is the way forward tho.

I think the drivers awareness course is only an option if its a copper that stopped you. If youve been done by a camera its usually 3 points 60 quid or worse. Ive had that twice in the last 10 years for 42 in a 30 and 86 in a 70.

43mph in a 30 zone is 153% the speed limit.

I'd expect 3-5 points and £60-£150 fine judging by Pepipoo and stuff.

I got a fixed penalty for 43 in a 30. Does the letter you received not offer you a fixed-penalty, 3points/£60?

First letter just asks who was riding/driving, the next letter will be the penalty or summons.

Aah it's just a NIP.

If you received it more than 14 days after the offence, they can't do you but you still have to fill it in. You just put your name in it and send it back, then you'll receive another letter telling you if you're being offered a FPN or going to court.

Out of interest , how long did it take the letter to arrive between the 'offence' and letter dropping through your door ?

I got flashed by a speed camera 8 days ago ... and have seen nothing through the door.

My first one too Sad Years of hooning about on the bike and I go and get done for speeding in a car Sad
I think i was doing 65, maybe 70 in a 50.

Gatso's only carry a 20% chance of a ticket if you're flashed, or something like that (I read it in the paper some time back). Permanent ones that is, roadworks cameras are a different thing it's odds-on you'll get a ticket from one of those.

I got the standard £60 & 3 points for 47 in a 30. I was told that 50 triggered a court appearance but matt would seem to show thats not correct

As far as i'm aware, the NIP just has to be issued within 14 days, rather than you recieving it within 14 days.

According to pepipoo you should be given a fixed penalty, i doubt you'll go to court for that.

Not sure about other forces, but west yorkshire police's cutoff for the speed awareness course is 10mph over the limit. As i said, it may differ with different councils/police forces. The course i did was very much different to what is done in warrington.

You can be offered a speed awareness course if you are done by a fixed camera, mobile camera, copper with a hairdrier (that pulls you over) or just a copper that spots you speeding. The camera that flashes you just tells the system to issue you a NIP, iirc it's a real person that deals with court summons/FPN (CPS that does it i think, not sure).

I haven't heard anything about that pull from CID/nutcase a few week ago, don't think I will either...

What if you got caught doing say 65 in a 30 as it's over double the speed limit, they just instantly ban you?

I got 3 points and a £60 fine for 58 in a 30.

Then 2 months later I got my licence back with no points and a letter telling me if I'd paid the fine I'd receive a refund (which I had).
