Prepping TTR's for offroading adventure.

I quit my job last month, I really had to do another biking trip. In last 2 years i've really got the offroad bug. So decided to do a offroad based adventure.

Plan is to ride through Spain to Morocco, spend aslong as I like in Morocco exploring the trails/pistes. Then come back into Spain in June time to do some trails in the Pyrenees. Hopefully spend 2+ months bumming about.


Bike has been completely stripped down, everything regreased etc. New fork bushes,seals, chain+sprocket, better bars list goes on.

Bike is slowly getting there, Still need to prep Stephs but we've done most of that one too.

Adv-spec dirt bikes invariably wind up looking fucking cool. Good start so far. Also, two months plus riding around Morocco and the Pyrenees… jammy sod.

I ran TKC80,s on the BMW handled the rocky and sand stuff very well got over 5,000 miles from the rear too and thats on a 300kg+ loaded bike, T63 "deserts" are ment to be the bollocks and would probley last quite long on the TTR they also have a very stiff high sidewall which is what you want crossing rocky stuff.




The worst road l came across on my trip, thanks f*ck for the bash plate and engine bars.

Because I've got no deadline if I need a new a tire I can just camp up and wait for a delivery/shop to get one in.

Tatters, you'll have to show me some of the best routes you took before I leave. Trouble is I have no transport to come see you, till the bike is finished anyway.

I'm going through a similar thing at the moment but with a XT600E.

I have the rack on order and will pick up some soft luggage at some point.

I'm wondering what's worth it and what's not in terms of mods? So far my to do list looks like this -

Renthal bars with some risers
Bash plate
Acerbis 23l tank
Stiffer rear spring - poor bike having me and luggage.

That's pretty much it really, trying to keep it simple. One thing that concerns me is the steel wheels. From what I've read they're strong and easy to fix but weigh a fair bit. Also what about the front forks - would some better springs be worth buying?

I've read a fair old bit about bike prep, some people really go to town, others just hop on and ride. Seems to me that covering the basics and keeping it simple is the best way, especially after reading Nath's report.

Hey Joe,

The main issues you mention about the xt is why I wanted the TTR, same built proof engine but with brembo brakes, nicer forks+shocks. Easy change airfilter etc. Also has the bonus of being lighter.

The ttr comes with a decent bash plate, getting another one is just for the extra tarty look really.

The rack was worth it, I got three made by this guy. https://www.enduropack.de/mainframe.htm.
He was fantastic and gave me better price for ordering three.

Long range tank is needed, otherwise jerry cans.

Decent bars are probably worth it.

I've also changed my clutch perch to a forged honda xr/cr one. Means I have a better choice of quality (forged) levers. Less chance of breaking stuff.

I don't know about the xt forks, I've heard they're soft. You could always be a cheapo and just stick in longer spacers. Do they have preload adjusters?

Looking good, prepping bikes for adventure trips is definetly more fun than maintenance and fixing stuff!!

I like those racks, you got some ally panniers for them?

My AT is all prepped and ready for anything..................... if I can get the bloody thing to ride right! think the choke is stuck on other than that its awesome and ready to roll, although going to be UK only for me for now
