Do any BCF dog owners keep their pets outside in a shed, garage, field, or kennel run?

If you're one of those types that thinks its the 'done-thing' to try and humanise animals, let them sleep in your bed and such like, please will you stay out of this thread as it isnt about that sort of sillyness. Confused

It was a springer spaniel cross, slept in the Kennel and had free roaming area in the garden.
Kennel was pretty sheltered from the prevailing wind, but sometimes the rain did blow into the entrance. Didn't bother the dog as it tucked into the back.

Breed of dog would have a strong bearing on whether its up to living outdoors. i.e a small or short haired isn't robust enough for winters.

Keep the bedding laundered and the water bowl fresh. And when they get old bring them in. Thats if they take to living back indoors, some don't.

Also had a mongrel that lived outside in the days, made a dog-flap in the shed door. She came in at nights tho. Took her ages to use the dog flap, used a bowl of food inside the shed to coax her in. She sussed it in the end. They're not inquisitive like cats.

Got 3 dogs now and they all live indoors, but thats because most of the time someone is at home.

Outdoor dogs can get quite territorial (more than normal) and again depending on breed may be 'barkers'. Bear this in mind if you have neighbours

My uncle keeps hunting dogs (I think springer spaniels?) outside all year round. They have a run which they spend most their time in but also have a caravan attached to the run that they can camp in in the winter months (uncle has a lot of land Laughing).

They seem happy whenever I see them, they get walked frequently and will go on hunts with my uncle and seem to enjoy what they do.

When I used to do a lot of country sports the majority of people I knew with lurchers kept them outdoors all year round. The dogs seemed happy enough. The lurcher we have at the moment, a saluki/collie cross, spends a lot of time outdoors through choice despite having the run of the house.

My uncle kept his jack russells in a kennel (referred to as "the box") and they didn't want to come in the house. They had fresh straw for bedding and appeared to love it.

The only time they came into the house was to sleep in the kitchen for my aunty's benefit when my uncle was away or when I came to stay Wink

My old girlfriend (years ago, I mean, not a pensioner I used to knock about with) kept two alsations oustide in a brick built kennel all year round.

The kennel was open/barred on one side and the concrete floor was lined with straw for insulation. They had always been kept outside, wouldn't recomend it for a dog that's been used to living indoors all the time.

Dogs kept outside have a very oily and shaggy coat compared to indoor dogs. When they came up to you and you stroked them you needed to wash your hands to get the oil and smell off. By god they look healthy though.

I've thought about it as my dog is (apparently)a pain in the arse and whines, barks, chews and pees when i'm not around. Obviously, i never witness this behaviour (as it only happens when i'm out), so am a bit uncertain how to train him out of it.
I thought of a run/kennel, and considered something like this, with a run/kennel:

https://www.hgc.uk.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/265x265/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/a/p/apex.jpg

I've decided against it, as i just see my dog chewing through it/destroying it in a fairly short time. Ideally, he'd need a proper brick/concrete type thing.

If it's for your wonder breeder program you might also wish to consider the security risks, Max. Be easy to break into a garden or wooden enclosure.

Which group did you sab with, Pat? I was with Chiltern sabs (Fail of Aylesbury hunt) for several seasons up to the ban.

Sorry to DP, but you really don't understand how BCF works yet, do you Max?
I know you'd dearly love to be able to restrict who posts in 'your' threads, but putting a 'don't post if you don't think this' line in your OP is generally like a red rag to a bull, and will inspire people who wouldn't normally post, to post.
If you really struggle with viewpoints which oppose, or are different from your own, then perhaps BCF and/or the interwebs is not the place for you.
Thumbs Up

Much like other posters, I have had dogs that like to be outdoors and will happily spend all their time outside given a chance. The dog I have now is very much an indoor dog and really prefers to be indoors. I actually had to make my old dog come in at night - he had dodgy back legs and the cold/damp made him worse but he didn't know that!!

I have a 'dog house' arrangement as there is a store room alongside the garage and with an alleyway between the store and back door - all brick built and covered, with a solid door one end and a locked metal gate the other for fresh air. I've always used either pallets or decking squares as raised beds to keep them from sleeping on concrete. I cover with carpet offcuts and then have a crate and plastic bed out there too. Never get any mess, but disinfect the concrete floor every month, just out of habit.

Friends keep gundogs and they are all properly kennelled and have been since puppyhood, so know no different and are quite content with it. Only downside is the noise issue - barking and howling, but they are half a mile away from any other houses, so not an issue for them really. The dogs will bark at a fox coming by them in the night and the stud dogs will howl if they can smell a bitch - neither things that can really be prevented. Security is a worry and all kennels are padlocked and security lighting installed.

I dont mind that behaviour at all. These dogs are all guard dogs anyway and bought for that purpose.
They're already being trained to make the most of the temperaments so the more terratorial they become, the better.

Ive gone one better than that.I'm moving somewhere with no neighbours close by. Thumbs Up Smile

My main reason for asking was to hear opinions about the well being and health of outdoor dogs, especially at night and in cold weather, but from what ive heard so far i dont think it's going to be a problem as they will be in proper runs, but the runs will be inside a sheltered brick building and theyve got 1/2 acre of grass to stretch their legs aswell as cosy kennels at the back of their runs.
They are all still pets though and will be allowed inside to do all the things other pet dogs do, but only in the kitchen and utility rooms.
Thanks for the help. Karma Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply, its helpful.
Security isnt going to be a problem where i'm going, and if anyone is stupid enough to try and take them after they're fully trained, they'll regret it . Wink

Yes, we had two boxers and a mongrel, and their kennel was outside in the garden with a very large and long cage. We'd usually leave them outside, if we were away from the house, or if we had guests, or even sometimes when we were eating.

But they also used to get their very long walks/runs in the country twice a day too...over weekends for very much longer. Thumbs Up

Well, it doesn't really take a rocket scientist to work it out, does it? I went hunt sabbing because i dislike and strongly disagree with the practice of fox hunting as carried out by the local hunt.
I didn't like it, and was bothered enough to go and take action against it. Therefore i went hunt sabbing.
Simples.

(God, i hate myself now for having used that fucking expression. Simples. Fucking simples. Gaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!)

maybe they do elsewhere, but my old group could barely afford to keep the knackered sherpa on the road, we wore sensible footwear Smile and no balaclavas were harmed during our activities.

We did have a couple of unfit people with us who were always 2 fields behind us... Laughing Depending on which hunt we were involved with depended on how much we used the van. Most Saturday nights i was completely knackered but happy, whereas the hunt master was probably checking his blood pressure Razz

In short, you can't tar us all with the same brush Thumbs Up

Actually, I understand your logic. Let me explain; I am from the country and don't really have any objections to hunting and baiting etc. BUT what we did object to, was foxes being planted in the woods around the 'hunt' fields a few days before the hunt was due to take place. Shocked

So much so that, a day or so before the hunt, myself and fellow villagers used to take our dogs out, down the the wood copse and surrounding fields, to run about and confuse the newly laid fox scent.

Hi, we made a run for our dog when we had our house built. He was a collie/husky thing lol.

Sorry for the cr@p pic, its a camera-phone photo of a photo lol.

https://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f324/SavageKymco/DSC00404.jpg

Once we had the garden finished and fenced/gated off, we let him have full roam of the garden.

He would sleep in his kennel at night, but usually was lying on the grass in the sun during the day.

Kennel and run were fairly protected from the weather.
