Its been awhile since I logged on BCF. Since getting a full time job and being in my band I've had no time. :<.

Please dont take this the wrong way, but I need some help. My band has an opportunity to be on Channel 4. This is very big shit. To get through, we need people to enter their email and first name. Thats all.

Rate as spam if you wish, but I know alot of you and I have been a member for years.

Cheers ma' dears.

I know one of the lads (Mitch, on the left, the singer/drummer) from I am Austin, he's from the same town as me and is/was my brothers mate. He used to ride around on a unicycle whilst wearing a jesters hat when he was 10 yo ish. Laughing

***Warning, long and possibly ranty/bitter post below...***

I voted for your band Eddie, give fellow BCFers a helping hand and all but I kinda wish I hadn't now tbh. Not so much to do with the fact that I'm not a great fan of your musical style (I'm not a great fan of the 'post hardcore' genre in general though) but more to do with the fact that I'm willing to bet the winner will be the one with the biggest online community they can call upon rather than the most individual/creative act (it's currently the frankly talent-free Cathy JJ - record company 'helped' write the songs...)

As I said though, I did vote for your band but in the interests of fairness (and because I have a lot of time on my hands today!) I'll give a short review of the rest to sum up for anyone who may just vote without listening to any of them.

I Am Austin Bass and drums (as opposed to drum and bass) outfit. Sounds like a more polished version of Death From Above 1979 which is not a bad thing (I loved 'You're a Woman I'm a Machine'), but I'm kinda struggling to see where they can take the genre that DFA 1979 haven't already and how they intend to extend it to more than one album without sounding repetitive.

Wooden Wires Quite pleasant 'west coast' vibey stoner blues. Bit like a less agressive/more chilled out Archie Bronson Outfit. Nothing startlingly original, but I'd imagine in the right setting (small tent at a small UK festival, sun just begining to lower in the sky, beer in one hand, herbal cigarette in the other) they'd be perfect.

Andy Flight First of the 'singer/songwriter' types to emerge here - is what you think when you read the bio, although that quickly disappears when you actually hear the opening notes. Much more vast in production terms than your regular acoustic guitar affairs. Unfortunatly the song just doesn't quite catch me although I did give it a few listens to take in the different layers. Def showing some potential though.

Ironweed Project Rrrrawr! That opening riff and booming low voice sets you right up for some dirty blues and to an extent the track doesn't deliver - something about the producion just doesn't convey the energy you know is there. I'd imagine they'd be pretty good live though

Shadez the Missfit apparently described as Indie/Electro but I'd say with the amount of focus on the voice it's more grime (if grime actually still exists in the ever shifting underground scene). Nevertheless, sounds pretty fresh - in the same way that Dizzee sounded before Calvin Harris got his dirty mitts on him.

Under the Driftwood Tree Bit pre disney Jack Johnson with these guys here. Lots of layers of things intertwining, making for a surprisingly dense sound. Again, in certain situations I'm sure they'd fit well (See 'Wooden Wires' entry) but for a cold wintry day in Inverness, maybe not quite as much.

Cathy JJ Looks quite hot and sounds just like Pink. "Cathy JJ has teamed up with XWAVE Records to write her debut Album". Enough said. NEXT!

B'Zeee Bit of Asian flavour. The flow is good, lyrics indicate this as a definite party tune, but I can already feel an ASBO luming from playing this through my stereo...

Alejandro and the Magic Tombolinos Holy feck! This tune doesn't even let you catch a breath before you are flung headlong into it's mish-mash of eastern-european/middle eastern/hasidic styles. If Gogol Bordello are 'Gypsy Punk', Alejadro and the Magic Tombolinos are 'Gypsy Speed Metal'. Will definately be used in the soundtrack of the Guy Richie gangsta film, although don't let that put you off - I had to have 5 listens!

The Federals "Meeting at school and sharing a love for The Stooges, BRMC and Jack White" They certainly wear their influences on their sleeves, but seeing as they all feature in my top 30 bands lists that's no big problem for me! If I'd have heard these guys when I was 17-18 I'd have proclaimed them the best thing since the MC5, but sadly I'm now a little more cinical so will demote them to 'quite good'

Paper Aeroplanes Could be on radio 2 within weeks, although this is not meant as an insult in any way. If the voice was a wee bit more rough around the edges it would give it a bit more depth I think (think Juno soundtrack). Nice, but possibly ever so slightly too sweet?

Viktoria Modesta This track sound like a LoFi version of Muse's 'Supermassive Black Hole'. One of the more interesting tracks on the selection both in content and production - would definately like to hear more of her.

Ill Audio Currently sitting with 0% of votes, but don't let that put you off. Starts out as a kinda Asian Dubstep kind of thing which is quite good, but then it goes into a half tempo Pendulum style thing - feels like the melody is straining at the leash but is held back by the drums. Some people on here will probably quite like this, and to be honest with a bit more polish I think I'd give it a guilty listen or two..

Jessica Symonds NYC style jazzy singer/songwriter. We've already got Alicia Keys though who, fankly, does this a whole load better.

Falling Faster Are you over 14? Right, well give these guys a miss.

Ms. Darks This girl is only 18?! Fuck she may be able to go somewhere - get her in touch with Roots Manuva pronto!

Avosetta EH's one. I think I've covered this one already, but not really my cup of tea.

The Iconyx "Plain English lyrics that speak for a generation through ultra-catchy tunes that will have you humming for weeks" Possibly playing the 'it's funny cause it's true' lyric card a bit too much and sounding a wee bit more awkward than the Arctic Monkeys in doing so, but I have no doubt that there'll be hundreds of folks out there who'll love this band and feel they are talking about them. Unfortunately it's been a while since I was 'Standing in the que with his fake ID, they could tell he's nervous cause his hands are sewaty.' and even when I was, I had The Libertines and Kings of Leon to guide me, which was all I needed.

Nedry Quasi-futuristic Dubstep with a kinda Bjorky vocal. Probably what the latest Massive Attack record should have sounded like.

Samantha Jean Folk. Good old Folk. Guitar by Woodie Guthrie, voice by angels, talent by experience. Not everyone's cup of tea and not anything startling (not quite up to Laura Marling standards either) but it works for me, although I imagine that this is probably not the right platform for her.

Hmm, on reading that again it sounds like I was being quite negative! So to rectify that (as it anyone's read this far or actually cares!), here's my top 5 - ie the ones I'd pay to go see;

5) Ironweed Project
4) Andy Flight (was v close between him and Viktoria Modesta, he just sounded more complete already)
3) Wooden Wires
2) Samantha Jean
1) Alejandro and the Magic Tombolas

Gypsy Speed Metal FTW!

They have always tried to be somewhat racy. I used to go fairly regularly as it was an OK live venue, last there around '91 to see a mates thrash band play. It was a dive then and had been rumoured "to be closing imminently" for at least three years before then, that's why I was so shocked to see it mentioned Laughing
