hi i have recently passed my full bike test and i have a tzr 125 at the moment. i was thinking of going straight up to a 600cc but not sure what is available or what is a good 1st bike, someone suggested a honda hornet 600cc or a suzuki bandit 600cc... and thoughts?

i have a hornet 600, great bikes. lots of power, but very forgiving, and they crash well too (its gonna happen lol). how old are you too? sportsbike insurance is a lot more than nakeds.

very solid and reliable, and not bad lookers either Smile i got mine after having a CD250 for about 6 months, and that was a year ago. im still smiling everytime i open the throttle.

i am 20 nearly 21 ans i have around £1500-£2000 to play with so not alot really umm i have had a go on the hornet and i have to admit i loved every second on it...

Both good bikes, Bandit will be cheaper.
Just asking what 600 you should get is too vague. Do you want naked or faired ?, sporty or commuter ?, road bike or trailie type bike ? Whats your price range ?

ok i am also 20.. 21 in april, and i got my hornet last year for £1650.. another £400 for insurance and that was just about £2k. it is possible then Smile

Another possible for you could be an SV650. They handle well are very reliable and have a punchy v twin engine. You can also get em semi faired or naked.

thats a very good point do you no how much bhp there putting out because im only allowed 33bhp or would you guys say dont bother restricting it

I think the SV is around 70BHP, so you can either buy one restricted or have a 33BHP restrictor put in, the same as you can restrict any 600cc bike.

No idea.... i've never had to get involed with that shit because i'm an old geezer.
But there are plenty of people on here that have knowledge about the restriction stuff.

my insurance is third party fire and theft in my name.

i had mine restricted for first 5 months of riding it, took them out about 7 months ago. it was definitely worth having them in at the beginning as i was still getting used to size, weight and handling of bike.

i still have my hornet restrictor kit, it has 4 inlet washers for the carb and a restricted ECU. that way the bike will only ever try to give out 33bhp.

my kit was £120ish fitted from a yamaha dealer... its the proper Honda kit.

took out with a friend from here (m0l0t0v), he knew the mechanical stuff more than me but i have learnt now Smile

i say its worth restricting for the beginning, but not for 2 years. officially mine are meant to be out in July this year Very Happy

I've heard that restrictors only really affect your top end speed, so is it really worth running illegally ?
Also if you were to have an accident and your insurer found out the bike was not restricted, then this would make your insurance void, with all the hassle and possible prosecutions that would follow.

I was pulled over last week by roadside coppers just for coming off a roundabout with my knee nearly down and a loud stubby exhaust being extremely noisey in second gear.. they checked MOT, insurance and tax and obviously my license. not a word about restriction. i have a certificate under my seat just in case though. didnt even get asked about it!

they greatly affect acceleration and rev ranges too, i couldnt get past 30 in first when i was restricted.. now goes up to 60. also the topspeed is affected obviously though (about 100 when restricted, have hit 130 de-restricted)

see above answer + i was in a small accident last year, some woman turned into her driveway crossing my side of the road without seeing me coming towards her, hit my side. i had no-one come to my house from insurance company check my bike (i had an estimation of damage costs done by local bike shop) and no-one came in the whole process to check my bike, i sent photos by email. once again, no restriction mentioned.

con? i think so.

the only reason i can give for restriction is to get used to the bike for a few months first without having silly power behind you to further the damage to you if a mistake is made.

edit: i doubt jail time.. but possibly points and fine. im sure people have been caught on here. theres always the "is restriction necessary" question going on.

I doubt whether the police would check bikes for restrictors unless you were seen doing a stupidly excessive speed, or you were involved in an accident, where either yourself or someone else was hurt, in which case the police will check the bike to see if any defects contributed to the accident.
If you insure a bike and its supposed to be restricted to 33BHP, the insurance company will certainly make your policy void if they find out that bike is full power. You are then in effect riding without insurance.

The incentive is not to give the insurance company a reason to refuse to pay out. Insurance companies love people telling them lies, it means they get the money for your premium but have an excuse not to pay out in the event of a claim.
