Quick question for a mate of mine, he wants a fireblade, has £2500 to spend (could possibly add another £200 or £300 if needed)

Im not too clued up on prices for them so thought i'd ask here.

Thanks Karma Thumbs Up

A 929 for sure.

Maybe a battle scarred 954 if you look hard enough. Judging by others impressions of the 929 (I had one but not the 954), it'd be worth going for the larger cc.

Definitely a private, low mileage 929... albeit my was Cat C registered. I got mine for £2400 including delivery - it had service history, 2 previous owners... Mods included rear seat cover, haynes manual, renntec grab rail. Bike was cosmetically and mechanically good. I've abused it after a year, 10000 miles and hard winter use. Budget £3k for a private 954. Get a 954 if you can, but saying that, the 929 was presented in PB's top 100 bikes. The 954 is a well refined and polished 929 with suspension tweaks and better midrange and a less glitchy fuel injection.

Purists will want foxeye models... but the 929/954's should be regarded as 600's on steroids. Less than 200kg wet and about 125bhp with a chassis that will make good use out of back roads and tour in style Wink (it's all relative)

I picked up my 954 for £2800.

That was three years ago. It's an 02 plate and it had 29k of rapidly accumulated commuter miles on the clock. The mileage made the bike less desirable, but mainly it was the fact that it needed a damn good clean that brought the value down.

Thumbs Up

I got first and second 954,s 3 years ago for £4800 and they were mint 04 bikes with 2,000-3,000 miles on the clocks so you should be able to get a tidy one with under 10,000 on the clocks for around £3000.

be careful though as there very easy to crash. Embarassed

If you can plump for a 954, like Craig, then it'll be the bike to go for. If you DO get a 929... make sure it has these things done:

Arrow Fork bottom recall - I think the RRY's were affected. Honda have been known to have a bit of an issue with materials selection. Long and short of it, the bottoms would corrode from the inside.

Arrow Headbearings - when I had mine, the headbearings were replaced at 13k by the previous owner - I've been told that for my next MOT, due in may, I'd need new bearings. Swap the OEM honda ball bearings for some needle roller bearings so they don't wear out every 15k! The breakdown recovery man (also had a 929) told me that was the main factor. Makes the 929 a bit more flighty apparently but that's what he told me.

Arrow Power Commander + Can. I got a used PCIII off ebay for pretty cheap - £120 and a micron can for £60. The standard exhaust sounds too feeble and it's just massive! That said, the stock can is light enough. PCIII is the important thing since the fuel injection on the bike is mega glitchy! The bike used to hunt between 2-4.5k in first gear in town, making town + pillion work a bit of a bitch. Can + Mapping sorts it out. The same problem is evident in the SP1's because it was honda's first foray into mass production FI (the RC45 did have it, but it wasn't exactly common as muck) 954's FI is a LOT more sorted.

Arrow R&G's - a DEFINITE MUST. OEM panels are silly expensive. I've had my bike drop a few times by idiots who think they can pose on it. Nothing was damaged as a result other than a scuffed mirror.

Other than that, they're a joy to work on - oil changes are simple and despite what people say, the brakes are still pretty damn good for their age and doesn't have any inherent issues with them... unlike Tokico 6 potters.

TBH, I've used and abused mine in the summer and winter and found that a good service and fettle every 4k miles and dunlop roadsmarts every 7k makes it a very capable, do-it-all superbike. So what if it's not a gixxer or an R1... you can use a LOT more of the bike on the road and not have it bite you in your arse. They're fine for commuting too!
