2t - 4t oil. the "t" bit?

Hello All,
This has been bothering me for a while, so I thought I would share. Oil comes in two stroke and 4 stroke types, (also many other types that are irrelavent to this question). So I was wondering why they are known as 2t and 4t oil. What is the relavence of the "t" suffix?

Sorry if the answer is obvious but it is something that I have never known.

Think it is for Tempi, which is Italian for times. A 2 squeak is in Italian is a 2 Tempi

T is short for Tiempo which is italian for 'Time'.

Hence it means 4 Time or 2 Time. The direct translation would be stroke I guess.

i was under the impression it came from german. T for Takt, which means stroke.

according to my house mate who lived in Germany for 9 years he was under the impression that it was stroke, in german, which is takt.
also means beats in music depending on context
