Brake lines zx6r j1

Ive ordered some new Goodridge braided brake lines for my 2000 kawasaki zx6r j1.

Im not looking forward to changing them, as tbh i have very little knowledge on how to do it, and i can't afford £60 an hour labour at my local workshop.

Could anybody try to describe what i have to do?

im assuming its going to be difficult because the new lines will be dry and full of air.

Any help appreciated.

Drain fluid out of system
Remove old hoses
Fit new hoses
Refill system with brake fluid
Bleed brake system

This is how i did it on mine. There really easy to do, Its just getting them to bleed through on the front that is the hard part. Just need to be patient with them.

Firstly, Clamp the pipe that leads from the resoivoir to the master cylinder (Its the pipe from the pot to the front brake lever and from the pot to the top of the rear cylinder)

Then unbolt the old lines from the bike, Noting how they are routed (on the front remove the front nose cone as it makes the job 10x easier.

On the front, If you are going from the standard 1 peice line that splits off into 2, Unscrew the black clip to allow the line to come away from the bike (You will see it when the front of the bike is stripped). You will have to make a spacer for this. I used 2 nuts and a few washers and it works perfectly.

In the picture above, You can see the orange clamp on the line coming from the resoivoir to the cylinder. You can get them from halfords for around a fiver.

Also you can see the black peice of plastic where the outer line runs to the caliper on the front right (If you are looking at the bike from the front). Also look at the slight offset in the top banjos. One line is slightly longer to go to the right caliper (Like you are looking at the bike from the front)

Then attach the new brake lines. Make sure you put them on like this.

Washer-Banjo (Straight banjo)-Washer-banjo (Slightly off set) washer

With the bold through the middle. That is for the front with 2 lines.

If it is for the rear or a front setup like the standard one it will be just

Washer-banjo-washer with the bolt through the middle.

All bolts and washers are supplied in the kits! If it sounds complicated, It really isn't. When you get the kits and look at them it will all become aparant.

As for bleeding the front, The best way to do it is to basically tie the brake lever to the handle bar with a cable tie and let gravity do the work for a bit. It takes a while to let the fluid get down the lines.

While you are waiting for the front to get fluid into the lines do the rear which is really a peice of piss to do.

Take note on how the line is routed and remove the line after you have clamped off the brake line coming from the resoivoir.

Then unbolt the line and refit the new one remembering to put the washers on.

Then bleed the brake lines as you normally would. Just give yourself pleanty of time to do the job, a good afternoon should be fine and be patient with the front lines, They were a right sod to do for me!

When you look at them you will see how easy it is to do. I was putting it off for ages as i thought it would be hard to do, But it is very easy.

The fitting side doesn't worry me too much, its the bleeding that im concerned about, but i will just have to be patient, and hope for the best lol.

If they arrive this week, i'll attempt them either saturday or sunday.

The bleeding is the worst side of it. Just be patient with it.
