HELP night mechanic LEEDS?? Arrrrgh

So just posted this up but the internet seems to have lost it so i will try again.

Bike will not go into second gear, i have been riding it all day just filled it with luggage for my trip to scotland tomorow, it is a ER5.

cannot belive it has happend tonight i have not had any other issues.

It drops down into 1st fine then will not go up past neutral, will not go straight into second form neutral. have tryed it by hand rocking it and riding it.

neeed soem help!!!!

Its a kawasaki gearbox, they wont go up past neutral through design, when your moving it should work fine.

I have tryed riding its goosed! Set off select 1st is fine try change to second it dose not work.

I could Gear change to second from neutral, when the bike was working.

you always have to pass neutral to get to second?

I mean when your not moving, its to help you get into neutral without ending up in second by accident, should be fine as soon as you are moving though so doesnt sound like it is the problem.

pudsey, just going to have a fiddle with the clutch cable where it enters the engine as i have been told this could be the cause.

If it was the clutch it woult probably still at least try and get into second when you bring it up, like clutchless shifting?

Thinking about it my friend (the_godfather off here) had a similar issue on a divvy 600, the bit where the actual shifter goes onto the shaft bit that comes out of the engine had turned so that the angle was all wrong, this meant that it wouldn't shift right.

Not sure if that makes sence?

Put the bike in (first) gear, pull the clutch in and try to walk it along. If you feel no resistance (that isn't the brakes) then your clutch (and cable) should be fine.

im having some progress using the knowlage from the last few posts manage to get it all the way up the gears so i know that 3 4 5 are smooth and fine but still having major dramas from 1st to 2nd will report back soon!

Don't use 1st or neutral and pull of in 2nd. Rode bikes with a lot worse problems than that.

its still a basterd to get into second as in its taken me 10 mins to get it in this time of rocking and moving around, i know i could ride to scotland and hope i dont knock it down past second, but it would be just a little crazy as i wouldnt have any tools out there with me.

Im running out of brain power and things to try, i just wish i knew what the problem was weather i need some new gear things or what?

Does your chain have the proper amount of slack?

Unlikely to be the problem, but an unlubed/dried up chain can constrict and pull on the front sprocket, fouling the gearbox.

yes regularly check the chain it is quite a well maintaind bike, just feals like second gear is not in place if that makes sense im going to teach myself how the gearbox works by reading through the workshop manual Sad

i dont want to resort to a dreaded garage!

I had a similar issue on my old, now barbecued ER5.

Was the oil level. It needs to be spot on for the gears to work right, apparently.

Ask on here too, they are quite helpful.

Thanks lads i think i have got it working now seemed to be something wrong with the clutch as thats what i was messing with mainly.

not been able to test it more than a few times as its late.

The advice on it not getting into second untill it was moving was a big help as it was something i did not know and when i was trying to rectify the problem i was trying it none moving so you saved me extra effort!

I asked on the er5 forum but as it was urgent hit a few forums at the same time Razz

all the input was very helpfull!

Hope it will go into second smoothly in the morning, so i can go to scotland!
