Views on this, looks good and at 10W (15W with a screen) could be very useful for people who are off-grid or going mobile.

A car battery would supply 15W for a fair old time so I think I've found a good resource for my van/tent living schemes.

Impressive power consumption, but what kind of screen will run on 5watts? Must be talking a pretty tiny LED lit LCD. The computer doesn't seem capable of doing much really either other than the basics upto and including watching movies. Even most limited power supplies are fairly capable of running a reasonable spec laptop without much strain (80-100 watts) and won't cost anything like as much.

I would be keen to see this running full screen flash like Iplayer as one thing that put me of the aspire revo all in one due to the atom chip.

I think they're being a little optimistic. 200,000 dataplugs for 100TB @ 2w each. Super efficiency!

If you are putting 100Tb into a datacenter as DAS, you're doing it wrong.

You're scaling the wrong way.

I've not looked at the details, but I'd imagine what they are trying to say is that per-Ghz, using Sheeva-plugs to provide your processing capacity is more cost effective than traditional full scale machines.

A very rough example, providing 6GHz of processing capacity:

1 x 3Ghz Dual Core machine = 300watts
6 x (1Ghz) Sheeva Plugs = 60watts

Remember that power and cooling over a servers life often costs more than the server itself. When you start scaling out in that scenario, small, efficient processors can save an awful lot of money.

I work in a DC and we haven't had anyone try to host one yet. Very Happy

When these things came out (Sheevaplug, IIRC) we had a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation and figured we could get a comedic amount in a standard 42U rack. You'd need a fair bit of network gear and PDUs, tho.

Whack a few in with SAN/NAS backend and you could cope with some workloads, but not everything as all CPUs aren't created equal. I'd wager 3GHz worth of plugs wouldn't equate to 3GHz worth of Xeon for instruction processing or memory bandwidth.
