Starter whirrs a little but thats about it:|

Hey all,
So, NSR 125, dosnt start with the starter and its 02 so no kick starter...

Battery, old, dosnt look great, will check the lights revving the engine when it gets darker though...

Charged the battery last night though and the starter motor DID spin (not very fast though),
but disturbingly the engine did not turn over...
I think i heard a dragging noise there to (metal on metal but not the sound of gear teeth slipping).

After a very short time the relay just clicks but the starter dosnt turn.

I get the feeling that the battery isnt holding enough charge to spin the motor but when the motor does spin it dosnt turn anything inperticular...

I have heard that often the problem is a buildup of dirt but i would have thought that unless there was a centrifugal clutch or something simular then the maybe buggered battery and loose pinion in there or something?


Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!

there is indeed a centrifugally operated part in there, so new battery or a jump start off a car battery required before you go dismantling anything.

Well, thats good then as the starter wasnt whirring much. i have another battery i can try tomorrow
Sadly it wont fit in the bike but it will do to try out.

Strange thing is the lights seem okay without the engine running...

Maybe the battery just isnt holding enough power to give the starter the umpffhhh...

I think i will no doubt get the starter off later to check it out, want to go over the this bike and make sure everythings in good order (hope it will last a while ) so preventative maintainance is the name of the game.

Tried another battery...
No joy, still doesnt start, dosnt even want to turn the starter, relay just clicks...

Time to whack it out of the engine and have a looksey?

Was the second battery fully charged?

What your saying really just sounds like a flat battery, can you try and jump it from another vehicle?

Would agree with what's being said above, if the battery doesn't have enough juice to spin the starter motor properly then the centrifugal gear won't engage, hence the engine won't turn over

I'v tried two batteries, will check the voltage on sunday when i go home but thats two batteries i'v tried...

It did turn over for a short time yesterday but didnt sound healthy...

Will leave it till i know the state of the battery i guess.

Asside the starter the bike works flawlessly!!!

She bump starts pretty easily though, getting it down to a fine art now, just struggling to keep remembering the fuel cut off heh.

^^^ Possible both batteries were gubbed ... if you are 100% sure one of the batteries was ok then I'd you should be able to take starter motor out without having to take the engine out ... a little less work

Yes sir, you are indeed correct
Loverly little nsr, pannel off, engine side case, 2 bolts and it should drop out we hope... Or at least thats what the manual says heh.

Will give it a shot on the weekend
