Below is a link to Mark Mardell's blog, he's in th US looking at gun culture. Have a read and see what you think. I actually think it's a good idea, imagine the gun fights!!

Becuase its a blog, people can add comment at the bottom. For some strange reason the BBC has changed things so all comments are displayed. This means the page takes ages to load and is about a mile long.

Anyway, worth a read.

Thumbs Up

So it'd be case of who could draw the fastest. Laughing

Let the yanks do what they will, just aslong as they don't allow similar in Britain.
Imagine Ped-Bois with pistols...us bikers will be moving targets.

I'd like open carry here.

At least its all honest and out in the open, concealed carry is much more worrying to my mind.

Not that we are going to be given the choice of course.

I think concealed bury is about as far as you can go over here... Wink

Rough figures for 2003 according to t'internet.

America: Gun control? No. Population: 295 milion. Deaths by shooting: 10,828 (0.00367%)

Britain: Gun control? Yes. Population: 61 million. Deaths by shoting 81 (0.00013%)

So you are 28 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Britain.

At least you're not given 5 years for handing in a fire arm to the police in the US. Thumbs Down

Hi

I have no great worry with the basic idea of concealed carry or open carry, although better if people realise that just because they can do something doesn't mean they should.

Don't think the guns are the problem, rather the attitude of some who would want to carry them. And I think that attitude has been partly caused by the constant restrictions placed on everything.

All the best

Keith

Surely if you factor in the population difference, then it's only ~6 times more likely that you will get shot dead in the USA than in Britain??

i.e

295/61 = 4.83

0.00013*4.83 = 0.0006279

Thus, 0.00367/0.0006279 = 5.844

One of the respondents does say the people who support open carry are exceptionally sensible so aren't really a worry.

I don't think it would work here, or atleast there would be a pretty massive blood bath to begin with until things settled down.

One point the open carry people made was about the erosion of civil liberties (apart from the dubious nature of the right to bear arms in the constitution...) The argue that its actually government that wants to disarm the public so they can have more control without fear of armed public uprising.

Thtas the whole point of the US right to bear arms. Its basically there so the 'people' (I think it refers to a 'militia' which is why its dubious) can do the whole armed uprising if a political leader tries anything on.

Obviously when George W fudged the votes in Florida, no one got shot so...

I'm quoting this Ghostie, as that is some special maths! Stinky's correct.

The proportion of Americans killed by gins in a year is 28 times that of the UK.

Don't know how I feel about the Open Carry thing - I doubt that it is these guys, or people like them which cause the deaths, but the vast number of weapons over there doesn't help.

The toddler death is a very appropriate example of this.

Hmmmmm would I rather somebody had a gun and it was hidden or they had a gun and I could see it and run like a motherfucker before they pulled it.

To be honust if I was American I would have a gun purely because not having one would sort of put you at a disadvantage in a gun fight. Plus a pink revolver would look awesome next to my gucci man bag.

Expressing them as a percentage already factors in the population difference. It's your likleyhood of being shot PER HUNDRED people.

At 0.00367%, roughly one in 27,000 Americans gets shot dead every year.

At 0.00013%, roughly one in 770, 000 Brits gets shot dead every year.

Pistols are for shooting at close range (crap for hunting). So why do the public need them?

I just don't get it. Are they that insecure they need guns on hips 24/7 ?

It's not about "why, how, where, when" etc, it's about no human being has any right whatsoever to dictate to another human being that he may not possess/carry a firearm.

The anti-gun legislation in this country is criminal.

Hi

For enjoyment for target shooting for a start.

While US firearms deaths are very high, Canada has similar laws but far lower death rates (barely worse than the UK). Compared to the UK, French firearms laws are very lax yet their firearms murder rates are not much different to the UK (their firearm suicide rate is far high, but there are any number of other ways to kill yourself).

All the best

Keith

Hi

My French is lousy, but a brief look round suggests that the French gun laws are far more lax than ours, and that in some situations plenty can legitimately own fully automatic weapons.

Suspect they are far from unique. I know when I worked in Belgium that a few of the bods I worked with had pistols, and were pretty lax about where they stored them, etc.

All the best

Keith

Ok i get the we are individuals bit, the right to do what the individual wants...no laws..no rules etc(Utopian) But there is alot of power in a finger, alot of heat of the moment mistakes can happen. Why make it easier for these to happen?

And in Canada you have to travel to find someone to shoot Laughing maybe why gun deaths are lower.

Hi

Heat of the moment applies to lots of things. Road rage doesn't appear to be an excuse to ban cars. If you accept "just in case the worst happens" as a reason to ban things then plenty of other things could be banned (including bikes).

Plenty of areas of the USA are pretty much empty and would take dedication to find someone to shoot.

All the best

Keith
