Indicator troubles DT 125

Indicators have been removed for a few months, and were put back on today. They were playing up before they were taken off the bike and were removed to get it through the MOT.

Indicators wont flash now, and they'll only light up (but again, not flash) when the bike is revved. 2003 model if that makes a difference.

My instinct is the flasher relay is dead, but has anyone got a better idea/something obvious I've missed?

Everytime i've had these symptoms it's been due to the flasher relay.

Assume you have no electric start, in which case you battery was a bit stuffed a few months ago and now is completely stuffed.

jump leads + car battery is the quickest way to confirm if this is right.

The bike is something of an oddity (for me) in that when you turn the ignition into the on position, nothing happens. No neutral light on the dash, no indicators (if they were working), zip. Bike is kickstart only.

Assumed it was normal for a DT125 as have never owned one - though my old DT50 I had man moons ago used to show a neutral light when the ignition was in the on position before the engine was running.

Should the DT125 be showing some electrical power before the bike is kicked into life?

Despite this quirk, the bike will always kick into life, 99% of the time on the first kick, and has never had any issues while it's running.

When you turn the ignition on it should have a neutral light and an oil light come on.
You should also hear the powervalve servo do it's test which it does EVERY time the ignition is switched on.

If you're battery is completely dead you won't have any ignition lights and you won't hear the powervalve servo.

First thing i'd do is what finpos said,start with the basics...

Battery is indeed completely stuffed. The ignition does not run off the battery but off the alternator so the bike starts quite happily off the kickstart. Once it's started you get a little bit of power out of the alternator which is enough to power small things like the neutral lamp but not enough to power the indicators.

Yes, just to confuse everybody, you'll probably find on a small bike the alternator has three sets of coils in it connected to three separate circuits:

One runs the CDI exclusively (usually called self exciting ignition)

One is wired through the reg/rec to charge the battery, the battery is then used to run some of the secondary electrics on the bike, e.g. indicators, horn, warning lamp, brake lights. With a knackered battery, you'll find none of these work properly. All this stuff should work with the ignition switched on.

The last one pumps rough AC straight to the Headlight and tail-light, this is confusingly called direct lighting and why the headlight won't work with the ignition off and fades at idle.
