hey all,

Been playing bad company 2 recently, but my graphics card seems to be struggling and I have to have the settings set to medium or lower.

My current setup is:
quad core 2.4GHz over clocked to 2.8
4gb DDR2
Windows 7 64x
Nvidia 8800GTX over clocked to almost Ultra spec

I'm looking for a card that will be able to play the game at 1920 * 1200 at or very near max settings.

As little as possible really.

Spending £150-200 wouldn't be an issue, if we're talking £400 then I may have to have a rethink.

I'm maxed out at 2560x1600 with a GTX285, haven't seen under 30fps so far. You might get away with a 260 in that case (around £170).

If you have £200 to spend maybe look at one of the cheaper 275s.

Reckon that'll be able to run it at max settings?

What quad core do you have? This game is very cpu heavy and an older chip might be holding you back a little.

GTX275 should be easily ok. I have a GTS250 1gb running DX9 high 1680 x 1050, never drops below 30.

If you're struggling turn off HBAO, it's a massive drain on gpu power and you won't notice the difference in the middle of a fire fight.

DX9 will also run a fair bit faster than DX10. You can force it on by locating the settings.ini file and changing Dxversion=auto to Dxversion=9.

You should find this in My Docs\BFBC2\settings.ini

Watch out buying nVidia 2xx cards, they don't make them any more! I had trouble recently trying to buy a 275. If you search the net you'll see the majority of places don't have any in and can't tell you when the next lot will be in either. I managed to get a Palit GTX275 from www.custompcwarehouse.co.uk, but if you do this I recommend you call them first as they don't have stock levels on their website. Got my 275 for £178 delivered, and it's ace.

ATI are, quite frankly, shite. Thankfully, due to their refusal to cooperate with the FOSS community over drivers, I'm never going to be using their hardware, much less buying it.

Nor will I ever recommend their products to anyone, not even the most ardent M$ fanboi - that's how much I loathe and despise ATI.

That said, a GTS250 is bareley an improvement over a GTX8800.

Nothing to do with a card, but I've been so long out of building PC's that I would think that the PC you have should piss playing BC2. Pretty much the sort of spec I'd knock together (bar the GFX card) to play some PC games on myself. I dont believe the CPU could hold that system back, how can a quad core on 64 bit W7 be throttled?

Confused

if you are running windows xp, a utility called gamebooster, is excellent, it turns off all necessary programs so speeding up your pc, really makes quite a bit of difference

on my vista pc it makes it crash though, although im hoping to solve this by figuring out which thing needs to be left running

Ati is totally gay. Yeah the 4870x2 is quick but put that against a 295 or SLI the rest of the 2xx and it's not that much different.

The 8800 will really be stretched for running max settings, recommended is a GTX260.

Yeah the GTS250 isn't THAT much different than the 8800 it's still slightly better. Run it in SLI and it's faster than a GTX280.

For BC2 in particular, it prefers nVidia. Ati has slow as f00k loading times for no good reason. ;P

No. Laughing

BC2 LOVES quad cores. Even the audio in the game takes a core to itself.

and compare a 4870x2 to a 295gtx.... yeahhhhhhhh or an sli'd 2xx gen... there both mles newer cards ... i tell you what go crossfire a pair of 5870's and find a nvidia sli setup that freforms the same. or has dx11 oh wait they dont....

kind of by acting like a know it all wanker. when there is evidence on 100000000000000000000000000 websites that show ati cards rape an have done for the last year or so. nvidia are falln behind. ever wonder what made xfx go ati? hmm 4000 seriese ati cards demolishing nvidai cards worth 100+ more?

only thing that is still true intel chips still the way to game atm.

Let's see - first 2 search results:

www.techspot.com wrote:
Although the Radeon HD 4890 showed strong gains in a few select games, it was the GeForce GTX 275 that consistently delivered excellent performance.

Looking back to our testing results we see that the GeForce GTX 275 slots in between the GTX 260 and GTX 285 graphics cards. In fact, a number of tests saw the GeForce GTX 275 performing closer to the GTX 285. Meanwhile, the old GeForce GTX 260 was able to rub shoulders with the new Radeon HD 4890 in a number of tests.

Now, STFU, there's a good (fan)boi.

Or perhaps you'd prefer to go off on one and post all sorts of intarweb "proof" to back yourself up. You seem like the type who likes to back himself up in his bedroom. A lot.
