Well court in 2 hours, and I may well be facing a bit of a revoke so I'm thinking project. I quite fancy putting my FZR6 engine and running gear on the aluminium frame of the 400, and setting it up so the steering geometry is as close to the 400 as I can get, then tweaking it to allow for the redistributed weight. I've never really had to do suspension modifying so this seems like a way to learn.

Anyway With the 400s being grey imports the different sources of information are giving fairly differentopinions, with some saying the frames underwent no changes and some the opposite, I'm assuming some sources only count the models they imported to their country. So I thought I'd see if anyone here has actual experience.

What I'm after is general details of the 400s, whether any frame changes (or engine casing changes) where undergone and which frame is the one to go for. Forks and yokes will come from my 600 and for the rear end I'm not sure, I've seen an R6 swingarm put on one, but cant find the link now, if thats an easy swop I'll go for that and a nice adjustable shock.

As far as I know the engine mounts are the same between all of them and the 600 as well.

Hi

The 600 engine is basically a 400 anyway (few internal bits are marked with the 400 model codes). Think they go in easily (people put the 600 engine in the Bimota YB7 which used an FZR400 engine). Not sure there is any real difference in weight between the 400 and the 600.

All the best

Keith

From what I've seen the specs have at least 20 kilos different in dry weight. I'm not particularly fussed by performance gains or worthwhile mods anyway, it's just something to pass the time while I'm licenceless. I'd probably do a frame down strip and paint to the FZR anyway, so may as well swop the frame, if I did it all legally and registered the 400 with a 600 engine then I could then sell the 600 frame and V5 for close to what I'll pay for the alloy 400 frame anyway.

I'm just a bit confused because the 80s FZR4s clearly have downtubes and I think the 80s 600s did too, and the foxeye 600 was the first to use the engine as a stressed member. I supose if the mountings are the same it doesnt really matter from my point of view, but I might run into problems if I did it the other way round (ie non stressed member engine in a frame that requires one)

Hi

Think the Foxeye engines are basically the same design, but they did change the bore and stroke so not sure the mounts are in the same place.

All the best

Hmm, so, to be safe I'll probably go for the later frame, looking at this page:
https://www.rampant-racing.com/fzr400models.html
Shows that the post 89 3TJ models frame differs from the earlier. Will pop to the friendly local breakers later and investigate.

Incedentally I did end up leaving court with no licence. So hopefully this'll be appearing in show and tell over the next few months.

Edit:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njIQUa0uRmM&feature=related is the frame with lower spars (and YZF600R is American for the foxeye FZR) so I should be alright either way.
