Your commute

It's looking likely that i will be working in Bristol anything from 1-5 days per week. Though it's a nice place i dont know anybody there, but i do know people in cardiff. The Severn bridge is free for bikes so i'm considering the commute. It's a good hour each way and is much further than any commute i've ever don before.

How far do you guys commute every day? Do you get used to it or does it drive you mad?

And I commute from Bristol to Cheltenham every day, its a 90 mile round trip and while it was a pain at first I'm used to it now. However after my year placement I'm planning on living closer to where I work. Its ok if its sunny and dry, but if its snowing or torrential rain it gets quite old fast.

60 mile round trip from Rayleigh to London, just finished my second winter of riding it. Bar muffs, heated grips as lots of thermals kept me sane. You get used to it very quickly and it's funny when my relatives in London moan about traveling all the way to see us when I do the same trip every day without thinking much of it. Looking forward to the better milder weather which will make it fun again.

I live in Bristol and commute through it on the bike, no problems whatsoever. On the motorways we have no (permanent) speed cameras that can nab bikes from the Bridge to as far as Brean which is nice.

If you can find ways to make your commute fun, do so. There is a horrid corner which is very adverse in terms of camber on my commute and I try and take that a bit 'racey' on good days. .

60 mile round trip daily from Chorley to Lancaster. Usually take the motorway to North of Preston (7 miles) then pick from a variety of A/B routes depending on how nice a day it is and how much time I have. Takes anything from 25 mins each way to an hour.

I almost always enjoy it - highlight of the day (even when it's cold/wet)

The worst commute i've ever had was a month of Grimsby to Cambridge and back each day. Early starts and late nights. It was in the work van delivering mountains of glass each day. We couldn't break 40mph because of the wieght in the back made it handle like a hovercraft.

Next to that was Manchester and back each day. That was fun. NOT!!!

Back on bike subject, my dayily commute is 4miles, which takes me 2 1/2minutes.

Commutes have varied. 27 miles each way when I worked at Rolls Royce, and also the same at the previous place I worked. That is fine.

For about 7 months I commuted 160 miles a day (by car). Not fun at all and no way would I want to do it again.

Current commute is 190 miles, but only one day a week so no great hassle.

Probably about 30 miles each way would be the limit of what I would be happy with on a regular basis, which in normal rush hour traffic on normal roads is about an hour.

Daily round trip of 25 miles through London, leave home at 7am, leave work at 4pm. Its not to bad as a lot of it is red route so bikes are ok in bus lanes while cars ar'n't. It helps cut down on the amount of filtering needed but you got to watch out for the a*** H**** who turn off across the bus lane without looking. Good set of textiles, gloves and boots are ideal for commuting in.

All round trip mileages:

Four years of 50 miles (Fast A road, motorway then short urban)
Six months of 100 miles (Motorway and congested A roads. Hated this one)
One year of 55 miles (Central London coming from the West)
Five years of 24 miles (Central London coming from the West)
Three years of 36 miles (Super fast round North Circular. A good one.)
Three years of 9 miles (Congested urban, but ok as very short)

Any round trip under 50 miles is bearable. Quiet, fast roads make for blissful commutes. My North Circ journey was going in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic and I loved it. Long commutes in winter are a pain. I’m currently putting up with working for a crap company just because the commute is short and I get to spend more time doing things other than wading through traffic.

Oh, and it seems that short, slow journeys kill the stators on Hondas.

One of my work colleagues commutes from Bristol to Cardiff on a daily basis without any obvious problems.
He rides a Bergman 400 (no accounting for taste I guess), and says that assuming you have decent thermals and wet weather gear, it's not a problem
