I have an 97 XJ600 and have just changed the oil and tightened the chain as per manual spec. Just taken for a test drive and when you are going up the gears and hit 6000-7000 revs it as though the clutch is engaging and the bike revs upto 9000-10000 until I let go the throttle and change gear. Any advice welcome.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping does it only happen in the higher gears, or happen more in them?

Try adjusting the clutch cable.
There should be an adjuster at both ends of the cable.Think if you loosen the tension off the cable slightly it should solve it...

It may do, but the proper thing to do is to first use the cable adjusters to put a load of slack in the cable, then adjust the clutch via the screw & locknut on the engine, then re-adjust the cable to give the correct amount of free-play.

Many people think that the way to adjust a clutch is by the cable adjusters. For most bikes - it's not.

I'm not doubting you as i know you're right,but my method does and has worked fine for me for the past 4 years Laughing

Just a minor addition as a thought to why it is slipping after an oil change and not before.

Did you use motorcycle engine oil specifically designed for engines with a wet clutch?

If you use car engine oil or bike oil not designed for wet clutches it'll screw your clutch plates and make it slip.
The extra additives to make the oil slippery make the clutch slippery too.

May rather than will. I use car oil in bikes regularly with no clutch issues.

Cheaper the car oil, the less likely it is to cause grief.

If you dig throught the literature, castrol gtx high mileage is stated as being compatible with wet clutches.

I did read the question and saw the fact the problem with the clutch was sorted.
Just wanted to know which oil was used..... As a fellow divvy owner.

Mine runs on supermarket cheepie 20/50 with no problems. But run something like Castrol Magnatec and there is a possibility of clutch problems due to the synthetic ester that clings to the engine surfaces like a magnet....

I agree. I use the same oil in my divvy as they put in our company diesel vans. Even the long-life stuff for our 18k-mile-service VW Transporters doesn't make the clutch slip.
