Memory trouble.

Bought this PC from my stepdad at xmas. Only had a 256mb memory card in it so i bought a 512 to replace it. When i restart the computer with the new card in, it does the usual memory scan and that is fine but then it freezes at the screen where it says it wants to either start in safe mode or use last known good settings. How can i fix this? I have put the old card in for the time being until i can find out what is wrong.

are you sure the memory card is compatible with your motherboard

Or could be a setting in the BIOS like one of many of the memory timing options etc. Try loading BIOS defaults or if you know what you're doing, set them to be less aggressive or check they are set to 'auto' where possible to see if that helps? Test with memtest86+ as well.
