As the title explains, im looking at doing my test in the next 2 months. I'm 18 and currently own a CG125 99.
Ive spoken too a few people and a lot recommended i go up to a 250 before a 500..
Im just not sure what to get. Obviously i will be needing a bike either 33bhp or restricted.
Anyone have an idea of what bike i could be looking at getting? All advice is much appreciated!
It may sound typical but i wud much rather have a bike that looks half decent =]
Thanks for your time guys

I'd go for a 500 or bigger bike and restrict it tbh. ER5, ER6, Bandits, Hornets etc... Thumbs Up

I went from a YBR125 to a CB500 to a 600 Hornet. Was bored with the 500 very quickly and regretted buying it so I'd recommend skipping the 500 and go for the 600 Thumbs Up

400/500/600 will do the job nicely. I wouldn't bother with a 250 personally unless you have a thing for 250 sports bikes. Smile

I ride 250s out of choice (I am too much of a wanker to ride anything more powerful), they are great round town, alright on trips up to Nottingham, terrible on very long trips.

However any larger bikes you get will be restricted down if I read you right so you will only be gaining a few BHP getting a larger bike.

If a 500 with a restrictor works out to be cheaper than local 250s get the 500. simples.

Thumbs Up

Are there any 250's you would recommend?
Easy to work on, comfortable, reliable etc?

Anything less than ten years old. (I tend not to listen to my own advice)

What is your budget and what is your preferred look for a bike?

Umm well at the moment i currently have a spare cg engine sitting in the garage that i need to rebuild (due to my stupidity of not checking oil) whole top end went!
I think around 600 or so i can spend worst case.
and look of the bike... i really don't mind, only way to describe looks is i just don't want something absolutely embarrassing haha.
I really am not fussed about looks as long as it looks ok =]

OLD BIKESSS
if you want something thats going to be dirt cheap, go for an old cb250. great solid bike like the CG its bulletproof will cruise at 70mph all day long so you can play it safe for the first 2years. You will definetly get one for less than 600 from ebay or somewhere else. and because its a classic the insurance will be cheaper.

example- https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1980-HONDA-CB-250-RS_W0QQitemZ120531616874QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycles?hash=item1c103e846a

although saying that i still went for a cb400 so just ignore me Laughing

As I say to most people, look around this forum, there are tonnes of 'what bike next threads', write down the list of bikes you have seen listed, go onto google images, look at all the bikes. Cross off your list the ones you don't like.

Then go out to a few bike shops and look at the ones you do like, and if possible go for a test ride, (if able) if not, at least sit on the bike and get a feel for it - distance from seat to footpeg, how long the reach to handle bar is, that sort of thing...

Then make an informed decision based on what suits YOU.

Old Thread Alert!
