17-20 year old's do you ever get people trying to tell you..

It's kind of getting on my nerves now!

Yep, all the time.

When I go to College on a 600 I get loads of people asking why I'm breaking the law as it's too big etc etc.

I just happily explain to them that they are wrong and most are willing to accept that they are. .

I did however get some funny looks turning up at meets on a commando, when i took my helmet off (age 21) they looked at me in utter disgust wich i thought was odd! silly old biggers on there bantams!

I did, in a way, when I was 17.

I had a '78 400/4 when I was on my 33bhp probation. Most of the comments revolved around the bike's condition, but quite a few were along the lines of

"aren't you a little young to be riding that" - mostly because the bike was a true classic and was for 'appreciative owners only', rather than it being too big or powerful for my immature mind.

No I didn't, but I constantly get the 'look' up and down (even now), and get told 'that can't possibly be my bike'... I usually look at it, and say 'no you're right I stole it'.

I haven't really had much of the "you're too young to ride that" sort of thing, but I think it's probably because I look older than I am in a bad way.

I have had one or two strangers giving me "advice", and depending what and how they go about it, I normally get pretty angry at them for it.

The key thing is them being a stranger. If it was one of my mates then no bother. I welcome constructive crtisism when I am looking for it and I know you can't really improve without realising where you are going wrong.

I just have a very big problem with complete strangers telling me how to run my life or criticising the choices I make.

I get told all the time, but recently the questions i've been asked are about me being too old/big for the bike.

I had to explain that just because i had a beard and i'm about 6'2" doesnt mean i'm too old, i'm 17.

When i get another bike (when the insurance money comes in) i'll be able to comment on this issue... But yeah. Talking about bigger bikes my dad thinks he knows it all and tells me i can't ride anything bigger than a 250, so there is no point in me looking at bikes like the speed four.

I'm glad i did what i did.

mentioned i was getting an R6 for my first bike (and not restricting it )
which didn't go down well at all, i kept quiet and didn't tell them i was getting it anyway untill the bloke turned up to deliver it.


and this time round, didn't tell them about my Ducati untill i was sorting the delivery out

i keep them in the dark purely because i don't want to hear peoples opinions, it's boring.

When I had a big trailie on the road, I used to pull up at traffic lights, and get people looking at me, and you could see the look in their eye going "... but you're a bird!"

I think they expect birds on bikes to either have Viragos, Sportsters or SV650s

I've been told more than once by a few people that the CBR is too much bike for me, and that when I get it on the road I'll get into trouble with it (either an accident or going too fast) I just say 'we'll see' and talk about something else

when im doing a driver shift at pizza hut i have to use a pizza hut scooter (would be awesome on my bikes) and since lots of people including learners use them they must have L plates. granted people may assume im a learner and when i get a proper shave and haircut i look a fair bit younger but have all kinds of comments (usually from people with bikes) stating that im a newbie and giving me all kinds of pointless advice and stupid comments like their mid 90's zx6r is soo powerful that i couldnt beleive it or telling me their bikes do 120mph wheelies etc. had one guy (summer rider self admitidly) stating his sv650 is a beast an i'd crap myself on it, felt soooooo good telling him i have a (at the time) a wee 250, 400 then a 750 an had ridden bigger bikes.

however i try not to make assumptions about people like they do about me or give advice unless it is generally useful like where speed traps are or good routes etc, there was a guy at college who had a pretty shagged divvy 600 and was younger so thought his other better bikes at home would be something crap, went round to his garage to discover a vtr1000 sp2 (i think) race bike and several old (OLD) bikes like a kawasaki Z2's etc.

When I was pushing an XR250 back to mine, a builder stopped, asked me how much i wanted for it. Then when I told him i'd just bought it and wasn't selling it just yet, told me I was too young to ride it anyway and fucked off. Was 19 at the time, shame he didn't see me with the GSXR750 I had at the time...

To be fair though, I do look about 16/17.

The only thing I get is older riders mainly putting down my pride and joy by comparing it to their YZF-R6 or similar.
Of COURSE my bike isnt going to fucking keep up with it!

I get the opposite - I'm 38 and keep getting told my Varadero is "far too big" to possibly be on L plates.

It's not because you're young, it's 'cos there's lots of people who know nothing but feel you need the benefit of their years of ignorance.

Or, to put it another way, just get used to it because it's not going to stop when you get older.
