One over on a cager

Was on my way to work this morning and going down a narrow road with cars parked all along the right-hand side. I had entered this section and was about 20 feet in when a car coming toward me decided to enter it too. I stopped as I didn't want a head on collision tooted my horn and pointed back down the road. At this point he engaged reverse and backed-up to let me pass.

Now ordinarily I probably would've drawn up beside him and reminded him that, just because he had four wheels he didn't automatically have right of way. But as he backed-up I just laughed and carried on my merry way.

I must say it did feel nice not getting bossed around for once! Very Happy

If i have right of way or i entered the street first i never ever move over for cars or anything else.

I just sit keep going and if they don't move i'll just sit there in the road until they do. They usually get the message.

Most of the cagers i encounter in small streets like that though are exceptionally polite and automatically move over anyway.

yeah i find that too. alot of cagers actually seem quite considerate when it comes to both going through the same narrow bit of road.

but there's a narrow 40ft stretch by me and we met around the middle and he refused to move and expected me to walk backwards on the bike the 20ft or something til i removed my helmet and told him like fuck am i doing that.

The number of twats in cars who ignore those big white arrow/small red arrow "Who has right of way" road signs, never ceases to amaze me.

There's a series of them round the back of Olympia/Shepherds Bush, and countless times I've been on the "you have right of way" section when a car has just come zooming through, almost invariably close to swiping me off because they haven't even NOTICED me, let alone the sign telling them that they DON'T have right of way.

The problem with Bristol is there's a lot of very narrow roads, and I often find myself bullied or having to squeeze alongside cars.

I don't know why I stood up for myself today, but felt good for doing it.

I think I may take a more 'assertive' approach to riding from now on.

NOBODY has 'right of way' any more, it's termed 'priority' now. And some people might think that a chuffing great metal box might prioritise itself over a few mm of leather at most junctures. But well done on telling the pillock where to go.

Don't really get this story, why was this guy such an arsehole, he backed up for you didn't he? Was there space for a car and a bike but you just didn't feel you should move over?

I had a similar experience on Saturday, but the curve ball was a bloody woman opening her door and knocking me off!

Wouldn't mind but the car was parked with both mirrors folded in (manual on that car so not just because ignition was off) and 2 cars, my mate on his bike and SWMBO on hers had gone through. As I was going through with a couple of cars behind me someone started to try and squeeze through meaning I was more focussed on that than the car which didn't seem like much of a risk at the time. Next thing I'm on the floor looking at her ugly mug.

She had a right attitude as well. I said "I'm OK, thanks for asking" which I must admit was with full sarcasm, but I didn't expect her response of "never mind you, look what you did to my door!!!"

She then proceeded to claim it was my fault for not having my headlight on (at 12:00 mid day), so I pointed out that the bike was still laid down with the headlight on as it can't be turned off on my bike. I also took great delight when I photo'd her out of date tax - she said "I'm not happy about that" to which I responded "I'm not happy about you knocking me off, but you still did it".

Luckily no damage to bike, but her door is mullered. I'm hoping she doesn't claim as my insurance is due next week and could do without loosing NCB until it's sorted. Carole Nash said providing she doesn't initiate a claim they're not bothered and have renewed with NCB intact, but I'll have to pay the difference in the interim if she claims which I'd get back when the claim settled in my favour.

As above, I like it when cars give me space, so any time I can, I will also give them space or let them in if it won't significantly slow me.

I'd like to think that the insurance wouldn't pay out in her favour full stop, regardless of the tax. I checked at the police station earlier and she is taxed, just failing to display. Turns out it's a company car.

I suppose all I'm saying is that if you'd been driving a car and the story was just "some guy mistakenly or deliberately infringed on my right of way" it would be a total non-story, just a day to day occurence.

This "us and them" victim attitude bikers seem to have his hardly conducive to holding your position in the road and being more assertive. People do shit like this all the time whether you are in a car or on a bike, it's no big deal and it's normally not because you're on a bike, bikers just think it is half the time.

I expect he mistakenly thought you could squeeze past him. If he deliberately thought he would force you back then he was just some arsehole that would have done the same to a car.
