Avoid the VF. Engine top end eats itself and the gearbox is liable to explode at random.

The top end is actually the least of its problems-honda sorted it by modifying the oil feed to the heads-it was down to the size of banjo bolt used! They initially used one with quite small bore which gave a good spray of oil but wasnt a high enough volume to keep the heads and cams cool and lubricated fully. They fiddled with it until they landed on the right size which all but cured the top end problem.

The gearbox is known for the gear selector for 3rd and 5th breaking loose and letting the gears float up and down its shaft. Which is what mine did. It was still rideable but my god was it a pain to fix.

I voted elephant - but only on the basis it was used for trail riding to annoy people that have bought expensive KTM and BMW models - the bike it's self is quite ahead of it's time, offering similar weight to the KTM990/BMW F800GS (and a lot less than the 1200GS), along with the big engine. The brakes and throttle are rather heavier than modern machines and it seems the engine is possibly a bit less capable than my much-lighter (though much more expensive) 690.
Off-road I'd say it's pretty much as capable as the new big-bikes unless you're a dakar rider or something. I met a couple of people in Spain who had ridden over from England on them for some trail riding and had a reasonable go on them out on the trails.

Second vote would go to the cb1000 because it's pretty - the guzi looses out on this because of the silly riding position.

Simple the Guzzi, 2nd place goes to the Cagiva, the rest are run of the mill yawn bikes, (except maybe the VF1000).

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Decisions, decisions.
Can't decide between the Guzzi or the Elephant.

I like the sit-up stance of the Cagiva, but the Guzzi is tempting, especially, yeah, if you take off those boards.

Yam XJR1200 as a back-up, tho.

Serious question, why?

There not /that/ powerful really heavy don't look great and are complete run of the mill.

Admittly I have only ridden a new 1250 but that was one of the most boring bikes I have ever been on the engine whilest torquey it was very dull my dad summed it up by saying it's like riding a sewing machine.

I'm not trying to had a dig, I just honestly can't understand why these bikes are so popular.

They arent especially heavy and that oilcooled engine is from the late great GSXR1100 Slingshot so is quite easy to get serious power out of. Ask kickstart. I mean, an exhaust and some work on the airbox and you have another 15hp. Start chucking oilcooled GSXR750 cams in there and upping the compression and 140-150hp isnt far away. Get serious and it will go past 200 horsepower. Turbos will see it into the mid 400s.

CB1000 would be the only one that would tempt me, being a big Superfour. But I'd rather have a Superfour 400, or a CB1300.

You ever ridden a CB1000?

Big heavy slow busses. Fine for plodding and that's it. Like a Bandit 12 but a bit worse everywhere.

I'd go for the Guzzi, because I like Guzzi's. At least it looks different whilst being slow and a bit wobbly.

Out of the above i'd have either the XJR (the fully naked one though) or the cb1000 (cb look awesome) although non of the above if it was my own money Laughing

P.S. that guzzi is fucking horrible Sick

nice reasoning so far, 10 votes for the guzzi, but no reasons why???

i like bandit 12's not the gay faired version either, but i don't think i could part with my vf1000 for one, they are a bit too common,
im a bit of a pimp and like that i get quite a few comments with the vf

Nope. But I can't see how the Guzzi would be a non-plodder either. In fact, none of the bikes look especially agile to me. But if I had to pick one, as mentioned, I'd choose the CB. For mostly plodding around on.

Ya know me: I only go for how they look.
It just looks to me like it would be a nice size/weight for me to handle, especially round NZ roads.

I doubt if I would cafe it, although I can see why you'd wanta.

Although I'd always be worried about hitting some roadworks with all that gravel and laying it down, fuckin up that pretty white paintwork Laughing

I just like the look of it, more than the others.
The Cagiva, like I said, I like the sitty uppy style, always have (and a NICE packrack on the back, there!)

But I chose the Yam as a back-up cos I've had a run of Yams lately, although mostly shafties, is that one a shaftie? I didnt think they were, but the shape is very familiar to me, so I would pick it for my backup bike.

Ah, who am I fooling, I'd ride any of them, especially if it was back at home. Crying or Very sad Mate of mine's just send me some pix of her farm in Thames, me dad died last week and I'm more heinously homesick than usual. LOL, I'd ride anything right now, so long as it was on NZ roads Cool

Hi

The Guzzi could be fun to play with, upgrading the engine to Le Mans spec. As it is it would probably last for ever.

Rode a CB1000 a few years back. Very smooth, fair power and no steps in the power delivery. Nothing in the power delivery to play with.

All the best

Keith

Prolly change the HANDLEBARS on the Guzzi, though.
Not liking them much. Too wide.
Can you change them to Renthals or summit?
(I've got no idea whatsoever, I just know I don't like how wide they look) Laughing

I understand your scepticism, believe me.

They are hilarious bikes to ride as they have a very short wheelbase, no weight on the front and 120bhp with race can etc. I rode one with the only modification being a well set up can and it made me laugh like hell. Yes I understand it doesn't handle like a scalpel and yes it is pretty old hat but it is a simple funny-as-feck bike that doesn't take itself too seriously.
